Extra good vibes needed for my Mimic!!!
She is not doing well and is now at the emergency/specialist vet clinic receiving plasma. Hopefully she will not need a complete blood transfusion. She had to have a blood transfusion three years ago and I know the second one can be complicated.

I totally blame myself for her current state because I knew she should not ever be cut! She has had issues with bleeding all of her life. First discovered when she was spayed because it took her forever to heal. In 2006 she had a knee operation and almost died. The blood transfusion saved her. She has been tested for several blood clotting disorders but all came back negative. My vet at the time said he would never operate on her again.

A week ago she woke up with cloudy blue eyes and I took her to a her new local vet (I have moved). He did blood work and discovered she had very low thyroid levels but still wanted to do an ultrasound to check out her organs. He saw the little growth on her gum, an epilus, that I knew about and my old vet was keeping an eye on. The new vet recommended it come off and since she would be sedated for the ultrasound he would do it then.

The new vet has copies of all her old records and we discussed her past bleeding problems. I told him I was worried about her being cut. He told me everything would be fine. It would be a very small incision and then cauterized. He said it was better the remove the benign growth while it was so small. I kept telling him I was scared and he kept assuring me it was okay.

On Wednesday he did the ultrasound and removed the growth. Thankfully the ultrasound was clear. On Thursday she started bleeding and I called the vet - he met me at his clinic at 9 pm. He gave her a shot of vitamin K and said he could not believe she was bleeding. I brought her home and watched her all night - she continued to bleed a little. Yesterday I was at the vet's when they opened - a different vet was on duty. She kept Mimic all day to monitor her and consulted with the other vet. She said neither of them could believe she continues to bleed. She notated Mimic's chart that she is never to be operated on. She apologized and did not charge me anything for Mimic's stay but since they do not have anyone at the clinic at night I brought Mimic home.

She bled more and I was waiting at the vet when they opened this morning. They checked her PVC (red blood count ratio) and said it had dropped. It was 33% yesterday, 20% today - if it goes to 15% a transfusion is needed. They told me to take Mimic to the emergency vet because they have the ability to do the transfusion if needed.

I am so mad at myself for letting my new vet operate on her when my gut said not to do it. He was so adamant that everything would be alright. I know he feels bad but not as bad as I do. I am unemployed and facing at least a $900 vet bill (estimate I got today for plasma and 24 hour care - much more if whole blood is needed - it was over $2,000 the last time) and over $500 I already paid for the ultrasound and all the other blood work that was done. My one heartless-non animal loving-never owned a pet-sister told me to just put Mimic to sleep but I cannot do that if there is a chance she can pull through.

Sorry this became a long rambling story. It helps to get it out. I can't seem to stop crying. I appreciate any and all good vibes that DUers can send my way. Mimic will appreciate them too!

5. Here is what she looked like when she had the blood transfusion after her knee surgery
If she survived the knee surgery, surely she can survive the removal of a very small growth. I am trying to remain hopeful.

After the transfusion - she was still not feeling well:

Her leg and belly turned almost black from all the blood that pooled under her skin:

9. All the good vibes in the world from me and my pup...
Edited on Sat Oct-17-09 03:00 PM by Rhiannon12866
What an adorable dog! Kudos to you for giving her the best care possible. I've been there, too, have adopted senior dogs from rescue, so have had my share of vet bills, too. Your sweet Mimic and you will be in our thoughts...

12. Thanks! That's my pup, Jack...
We adopted him at five months, unusual for me, since I've previously adopted senior dogs. I thought I might have fewer vet bills with a puppy, but they have their own issues. *sigh* Jackie has a sensitive tummy, is on prescription food now, which seems to have helped. *knock on wood*

He's three now and has to be the friendliest dog on the planet... :loveya:

I know what you are going through. At least there is a chance of a happy ending for you and Mimic. Forget about the vet bills. She's worth every penny.

Keep us posted.

14. Ask your vet to cover the bills since it was _HIS_ mistake

seeing that you had records from the old vet that stated that she was not to be operated on.

And Mimic looks so cuddly, I wanted to give her a hug, so here's an extra vibe from me...

18. Update - I spoke with the vet clinic and she received the plasma and is doing well -
her PVC has remained the same - which is good. She is alert and was recently walked - the tech said walked well on her own and has energy - another good sign.

Her blood will be tested again at 10 pm and hopefully her level will not have dropped. It needs to stay where it is - going up would be wonderful.

Thanks to all of you for the well wishes and good vibes. It has been very lonely without her. She is usually right by my side.
