Martin, Kline in new 'Pink Panther'?

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Kevin Kline is in negotiations to team up with Steve Martin in "The Pink Panther," which also stars R&B singer Beyonce Knowles and French veteran Jean Reno.


Director Shawn Levy ("Cheaper by the Dozen") starts shooting the MGM project in May in New York, followed by Paris.

Kline will play Chief Inspector Dreyfus, who needs an idiot to take over the investigation of the missing legendary "Pink Panther" diamond ring. The person he needs is a fool who will divert public attention that in turn will make him look better when he solves the case himself. He then turns to Inspector Clouseau (Martin).

1. Frankly I think Kline would be a better Clouseau...

I always loved him in "Fish called Wanda." Steve Martin hasn't done "wild and crazy" for so long I'm not sure he's still up to it.

12. Of Peter Sellers, Robert Preston and Phil Silvers

I watched Matthew Broderick in "The Music Man" more out of curiousity than any feeling that it would be an artistic triumph. Regrettably, it was exactly what I expected. Competent, well made and totally forgettable.
There was and is and only one "Music Man" and that is Robert Preston. He was beyond brilliant: his enthusiasm was infectious, he manner charming and the whole movie was flawless. Normally I give first credit to the author: Meredith Wilson's music was as magnificent as any composition by Leonard Bernstein, George Delarue or Elmer Bernstein. The story is a larcenous fairy tale the way we wish life could/would have been.
But Robert Preston is so magnificent as to defy explanation. He is Professor Henry Hill.
I have never seen the remake of Sgt. Bilko. I love Steve Martin, but his dry wit is exactly the opposite of the bombastic charm of the legendary and wonderful Phil Silvers. I saw that remake flop before it was every released..
Now, they have remade The Pink Panther more than once and I would have hoped that they would have realized that there is only one Inspector Closeau and he was Peter Sellers. God Bless him.
Hollywood is trying to save money by filming in Canada(Crews make a lot less there) and retreading old ideas.
I know Rod Serling is turning over in his grave. He believed any good show, whether a play, TV Show or Movie started with a good idea and great writing. Hollywood bean counters don't want to fork out the bucks.
I was so happy when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote "Good Will Hunting". There still is intelligent writing and brilliant writers if we only encourage them.

No don't make a new Inspector Closeau movie, come up with a new idea.
Make us think, not fall asleep....

5. Hollywood is out of ideas

Well not really. But the money that backs our massive movie tastes will not back anything it is not sure of. Thus only proven vehicles get funding. Thus nothing new.

10. As I see it and please correct me if I am wrong, studios make these films

because they can avoid dealing with a screenwriter and all the rights the writer may have when providing the studio with an "orignal" screenplay. In the case of a remake as well as a film based on a book, they just get the rights and then hire one or more writers to whip it out. They don't really owe the writers anything artistically -they can change whatever they want and even remove original credit if so desired. Also, the fact that the orig. movie has a certain built in cache (branding), there is a built in publicity advantage. I think this is the reason.
