I usually politely say that I was planning on catching up on my sleep and put my headphones on and close my eyes. The ploy works but really sucks if you just wanted to catch up on your reading.

Sometimes it is hard to tell intent since there are no non-verbals... or is it all in those devil icons? How do you tell silliness from flirting? Also a lot of people flirt and it is just fun. But then I may have forgotten how since I have been attached for so long and I don't fully understand all the online etiquette.

I just find the nature of online communication very interesting. My husband used to chat to people before the internet was popular ( he's a software guy) and I used to be amazed that he was "talking" to people in California. I just think it is so cool ( but odd) that you can talk to people you don't know and might not meet, so easily.
