Poll question: Cutting a sandwich: Straight or Diagonal? |
|
Do you always cut all of your sandwiches the same way, or does it depend on what kind of sandwich it is.
What's the rule of thumb?

2. I seldom cut them at all, but when I do - usually for PB&J for some reason- |
|
it's straight down the middle. No shilly-shallying, no SIR!

6. across longways or sideways? |
|
there's a restaurant near here that has some very TALL bread, and the cut the bread lengthwise, so the sandwich ends up being about 7 inches long and two inches wide... plus they shred their lettuce, so it can be pretty messy, albeit very tasty. But I never think/dare to have them cut the sandwich the other direction...

8. Straight or no cut at all |
|
The purpose of a sandwich is to hold its contents. Diagonal cuts create acute corners with little structural integrity. While this may or may not be a problem depending upon the contents you must ask yourself, do you really want to take that chance? :)

10. Horizontally, obviously. You up-down paradigm sandwich cutters are so old school. |
|
You grannies and grampas with your old-fashioned nonsense.
This is the fucking 21st century you old geezers!

26. Nay, nay, nay. VERTICALLY. |
|
If it's round top bread (not squarish sandwich bread) a horizontal cut gives you two non-conforming halves. That is NOT acceptable. However, a nice VERTICAL cut gives you two mirror images. VERY acceptable. This is of EXTREME importance to us OCDs.
With sandwich bread you can pretty much swing either way. yer welcome :-)

Depends on the sandwich. Meat sandwiches are always cut straight. Tuna, Chicken Salad and Egg Salad are always cut on the diagonal.

"Wet" sandwiches like egg or tuna salad or PB&J are cut vertically to shorten the open edge and prevent leakage while "dry" sandwiches with cheese slices and cold cuts are cut diagonally to facilitate insertion into my piehole.

Except, strangely, I do not cut PB&Js at all. Of course, my PB&Js are pretty strange, too - Jif Extra Crunch, and orange marmalade. Once in a great while I'll substitute strawberry preserves for the marmalade, but it just isn't the same ....

I cut diagonally but not at the corners, (or across but not in the middle?) So each half is a 4 sided polygon but not a rectangle (does that make sense?)
although toasted cheese is often cut diagonally into two triangles

25. That's similar to the way I usually cut them. |
|
Every once in a while I'll do a curve or something just to keep from being too predictable though.

4 wedges. Toothpick with pimento stuffed olive holding each wedge together. Always. Other sandwiches I don't cut at all.

23. depends on the sandwich. BLTs generally diag. ham and cheese, straight cut. |
|
with a diag cut the ends can act like little handles. And never cut a hamburger. Why would you? I don't want to hear your reasons. There are none.

29. My favourite sandwich is some sliced meat, Stub's pickle, old cheddar cheese, |
|
mayo on French bread. That I'll slice straight cause I always sliced it that way as a child. Otherwise I will slice it on the diagonal.
