whats the strangest "treat" you ever got on Halloween?
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 09:27 AM by cleveramerican
there was a guy in my neighborhood who gave out.... I am not shitting you... Dog biscuits... every dam year... Milk bones

I had a dog so it was sort of okay... but friends who didn't were routinely pissed

his car got soaped, his trees got TP'd
I wonder if he is still there still giving out those damn dog biscuits?

There was another house who gave out these little prayer booklets... in chinese ... that was so weird and creepy you couldn't get pissed.

one time me and a friend went to this neighborhood bar .. the guys at the bar were so stunned they took up a collection and we left with around $35!

1. We put a can of sauerkraut or lima beans in the candy bowl every year
along with the candy. We let the kids pick what they want. There is always at least one kid whose eyes light up as he grabs it, saying, "Really?!"

Some kids like vegetables. :)

3. Saltines
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 09:31 AM by jmm
One year I went to a house where the family didn't speak English well. They looked really confused when we said trick or treat. We tried to explain we were there for Halloween. Once we realized they didn't know about the holiday we tried to say good bye and walk away but they insisted we stay while they opened a box of saltines and put a few in each of our bags. We didn't eat them but I do hope they don't feel bad for not knowing about the holiday.

A few times my brother and I went to apartment buildings where mostly college students lived and often threw Halloween parties. They usually didn't have candy so they'd give us cash.

Edited to add that I have a friend who gave out candy canes last year. Her house got more kids than usually so we made a trip to store to get more candy and they were almost out so she bought a few boxes of candy canes.

4. kids like beanie weenies though
When I was in college my now husband and his roommates gave some poor kid beanie weenies. I was on my way over with actual candy, but the kids started early. They swore the kid was excited about it, but that poor kid was going to have to carry that around all night.

6. Ya know...
The kid would probably have been happier about it if they had just given him the whole, unopened can.

9. No, it was something the homeowners had put together themselves.
It was a piece of paper that clearly had been photocopied about 30 times and was barely legible...something about Halloween being the devil's holiday and we should be thinking of Jesus instead, and then something about the love of God being sweeter than candy, and then a Bible verse proving that.

8. My daughter recieved a bitchy Jesusy mini booklet one year
It basically said that she was going to burn in hell for celebrating "satan's holiday". Try explaining THAT crap to a 5 year old. :grr:

My husband was pissed and wanted to confront the jerk, but we didn't see it until we got home so we didn't know who was responsible.

10. Yeah, I look every year for that kind of thing.
Forget razors in the apples -- tracts are the really weird things you can get trick-or-treating.

18. why the #$%%^ didn't they just shut off the light
Ok I get it, not everyone does Halloween but they could have just opted out and not turned on the porch light to lure the kids over.

This makes my eyes explode.

Wait -- are you looking for logic in the actions of someone who gives out tracts for Halloween?

12. Yeah, I hated to get the religious stuff
My parents dragged me to church every week--I didn't need more Bible verses in my bag of candy.

19. $10
I think when I was 12, probably the last trick or treating I ever did, my friend and I canvased every single available house in the neighborhood, from one end to another. When we got to one house near the end, it was 9:30 or so. The front light was on, so we went to the door. The lady who answered was surprised we were still out and said she was out of candy. So she gave us each $10 bills.

Maybe she thought we were going to rob her?

30. Rudolph Valentino's Arab headdress.

There was an old lady who lived on the next block.
She had been a costume designer back in the silent movies.
I think her name was Natacha Rambova.
Anyway, she claimed to have many of her original designs from movies she had worked on and gave them out at Halloween.
So one night in 1949 (I think it was '49. Memory dims now.) she handed me the purported turban(?) that Valentino wore in "The Sheik".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sheik_%28film%29

Wonder what it's worth now?
If it's authentic.
