Frozen pizza and /or store-bought pre-made pizza - what brand do you like? |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 07:06 PM by old mark
I haven't really found many passable frozen pizzas - I'm pretty picky about pizza, and I love the thin crust greasy New York style, but could also be happy with a thick square Neapolitain. I like a pizza with good tomato sauce, none of tha "white pizza" shit.
Recommendations? Favorites? Brands to avoid? What?

1. If I'm buying frozen, I usually go for Tombstone. |
|
I love the crispy crust that bakes up. Of course, the home-made pizza I make myself is better, so it's often a moot point. :P

They make some great frozen pizzas. If not, I'd go for Tombstone.

4. I never can remember the brands |
|
because the few frozen pizzas I'll buy I don't see anywhere but at Whole Foods, and we know how popular they are with DU-ers now...
I know there used to be brands that weren't pre-baked at all. It was the whole pizza, all there, but the dough was raw and required a full baking time, instead of the warming times on the pre-baked stuff. That way, you'll get a better and thicker crust. I have no idea if such pizzas are still produced or not...

17. I still have to shop at Whole Foods every now and then. |
|
Sure I don't have shop there, but some of the veggie brands I use (such as Veganaise or Quorn) are easily found there, and too often for less money than the big chains. Plus, freezer items like Quorn or Soy Dream haven't been sitting in their freezer for a month (or more!) because the non-health-conscious shoppers at Kroger or HEB won't buy the stuff ;)

5. I like to get Four Cheese pizzas |
|
Red Baron and Freschetta make some good ones. Then I add my own toppings. They taste a hell of a lot better than a regular frozen pizza.

7. I like a brand called Pizza Corner. |
|
Their Chicken Alfredo pizza and Taco pizza are really good.
One problem is that they are a bit pricy, around $7.

8. I make my own "pre-bought pizza" |
|
It takes just as long as the shitty stuff and you have complete quality control over what you get. For cheap!!!
Preheat oven to 350'F with well-oiled baking sheet. If you want thin crust, use a flatbread cut in half into two 1-ply rounds. For thick Crust, use an English muffin cut in half into two 1-ply rounds. Remove baking sheet and put rounds onto baking sheet. Top with jarred pizza sauce and shredded cheese of choice Top with toppings. Put in oven for 8 minutes.
Eat!!!

Rising Crust. Both are good ones. My absolute favorite is Red Baron Super Deluxe but I haven't seen it in the store lately.

It's not awesome, but none of them are. Still, for frozen it's not too bad.

12. Be VERY sure you remove the cardboard disk from the bottom BEFORE baking. |

It's EXTREMELY difficult to remove after. Frechetta. :-(

I use the cardboard to cut the pizza on and use it to easily get the pizza out of the oven.

Papa Murphy's! When I moved from NYC to Idaho, I search far and wide for a worthy pizza. Papa Murphy's fits the bill. They'll do a super thin crust if you ask. Try their thin crust pepperoni!

Palermo's also puts out a good pesto pizza. In fact, everything I had from them is good. They're relatively inexpensive, too. Kashi and Newman's Own also put out decent frozen pizza. http://www.palermospizza.com/index.aspx

27. Thanks for the info! I'll have to look for those! |
|
It seems like all the pizzas I see around here are pepperoni. After having Amy's pesto pizza, I've made my own, using the same ingredients, except I also add mushrooms. I make my own pesto, though the refrigerated kind is fine for this. I'm not good with crusts, so I get the refrigerated kind that comes in a bag. :-) :hi:

30. I've never been a fan of the pre-made crusts, way too much crust for me, LOL. |

I prefer a thin crust and those that you spread out yourself work well for me. I should try making my own, but I "take help from the store," whenever I can. :D

32. Bingo! I love Costco pizza! |
|
I used to buy a square one, bake it, then cut it into quarters then freeze it.
Voila! Each quarter was good for either one person for lunch or two as a snack.
All for $9.99. And GOOD too.

31. Safeway had some very good store brand pizzas awhile ago. |
|
I decided to get one when it was on sale during the super bowl (along with every other snack item imaginable) and it was surprisingly good. But they apparently don't make the small personal kind anymore. Oh well.
