Paul Keene’s figurative images often blend the history, mythology, and memory of his personal life in Paris, Haiti, and North Philadelphia with his love of music. The circle symbol, appearing here and in other works by Keene, functions not only as a design element but as a personal symbol relating to the ongoing struggle that characterizes the life of many African Americans.
I think it's a very beautiful painting too, which is why I posted it.
This museum is near my home, but I haven't visited yet because every time I go to Doylestown with the kids I visit the remarkable Mercer Museum founded by the ceramic tile artist and tycoon Henry Mercer. It's across the street from the Michener. This museum which is mostly dedicated to collecting 18th and 19th century artifacts of American industrial artisans is one of the more remarkable museums there is.
I do plan to visit the Michener Museum in the near future.
The Museum was founded by the great writer James Michener, author of the first serious novel I ever read in my life on my own - I was about 12 - "The Source." It is still one of the most remarkable books that I have ever read.
