You had to get rid of one state--which would it be?
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 11:21 AM by WillyBrandt
Two questions:

1. You have to pick a state to kick out of the United States. Which would it be? It would either be an independent country, or be merged into another country, depending.

2. You have to take a state and subsume it into one or more neighboring states. Which would it be?

My answers:

1. North Dakota goes to Canada. I can't think of any other state--Wyoming?--that contributes so little to American culture.

2. Jersey gets split between NJ and NY. And they'd be happy to take them, because Jersey had a pretty wealthy tax base, even if NY would have to take Elizabeth (but they'd at least get the Ikea there!) and PA would have to take Camden (but they'd at least get the Tweeter Center!). I imagine NY would immediately rename Newark to something less homophonic.

Course that would play hell with all the death penalty cases. Don't think Mexico has one.

3. Texas, and I am not being facetious.
We can keep America's dangler known as Florida, but only because it's got the Everglades...

The territory Texas was a part of originally belonged to Mexico. We started a war against Mexico in the 1800s in order to STEAL that land. Of course, America won so Mexico had to give us that land.

It's nobody's land. We just live on it. It's despicable how we put monetary value and selfishness into basic necessities.

They're a packof thieves in bed with "big business" unions and big business, pretending to be looking out for the little guy. The only thing they look out for is their own pocketbook and the only thing the little guy gets from them is screwed. Californians just encourage it too by voting yes for every goofy Proposition that comes along. They're broke because they're dumb.

I moved a year ago when the deficits went sky-high and everybody went into deep denial. I'm not going to work 60 hours a week, have my wife work, just to survive. I'm working less in Idaho, making less and have more time for my kids and disposable income to boot. I can also see where my taxes have gone, into the new kids rec center, the aquatic center, etc. and no crime.

Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 11:28 AM by Tolania
being born and raised in ND (only living outside the state for the last 5 years). The problem it NOT that is contributes so little to culture, it is that people pay so little attention to it and have no clue what they are talking about.

ND's biggest export is not wheat, it is EDUCATED PEOPLE. Besides, it has the cleanest air in the nation and a number of other things I could brag about but am too appalled at the moment.

Edit: typos and to add that because of the horrible comments I have heard over my 30 years on this earth about my beloved state, somedays I would rather it WAS part of Canada.

One reason I didn't name any Southern states is that so many have contributed SO MUCH to culture, despite their voting patterns.

93. Ohio is like mini America
I grew up in Ohio and traveled throughout it. There are many types of Ohioans and Ohio communties. Ohio is both urban and rural, industry and farm, liberal and conservative, educated and uneducated, tolerant and bigotted, and contains people of different religions and ethnicities. It was a fronter during the colonial days but quickly became a part of the new nation. Almost any problem in the U.S. is a problem in Ohio. Almost any good thing about the U.S. is in full strength in Ohio. Personally, I think Ohio, more than other states, represents the U.S. better than any other state.

I just pay tolls and bridge fees, in order to subsidize the parasitic Rogue State that is Delaware.

Did you know that Delaware banned public flogging only in 1952?
Did you know that Delaware maintained Jim Crow laws until the 1960s?

That tiny state is no small wonder. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Every state has its problems. But it's part of the Union -- one of the Colonies, in fact -- I have friends who live there, and I have been there and found it a wonderful part of the earth.

I don't like the notion of your thread. And that's just my humble opinion -- clearly lots of folks like it, and you're having some fun.

I often wonder why we get offended by others' opinions. I get offended by others' opinions, and they get offended by mine. Why do we take offense? Hmm.

And what about the Texans who are--gasp---not White? Most of them are pretty Democratic. Many of their ancestors have lived here far longer than mine. Should they uproot themselves for questionable welcomes in other states?

I'm surprised that more of you whining ass yankee's haven't drowned in the recent rains with your noses stuck so far up in the air. I think if you ask most Texans, they would be happy to secede, and start our own country. I guess you yankees are a bit useful to Texas though, because if y'all didn't suck so much, we may have slid off into the gulf by now. If Texas sent a another democrat to run for President he would win in a heartbeat. But we figured we would give a yankee democrat a chance to sit in the whitehouse for once. What do y'all do? You give us a bean stalk with the personality of a grapefruit from Massachusetts to be our presidential nominee. Thanks in advance for losing the "big enchilada" for us! Us Texas democrats want to thank you for keeping bush in the whitehouse for another 4 years. I would call you a bunch of ass-wipes if the Mods would allow it. But it's against the rules, so you won't hear me saying it.

141. I don't know about kicking anyone out, but Massachusetts ought to be
on permanent probation until EVERY one of those people repeats a basic driver education course. Sheeyot. Them's some bad drivers.

143. Why not merge some states and hope for better election results?
Nebraska with Iowa (a moderate state)

North and South Dakota with Minnesota.

Arizona and New Mexico.

144. And ya'll said I was crazy about Texas bashing on this board
There's a lot of hate, and not just because Bush is "from Texas" (honestly, he has a fake Texas accent and he's a northeastern blueblood). Those who refer to my state as "Texass" and call us all sorts of names may want to come down and visit some time. Most Texans are friendly and welcoming.

145. You'd be surprised how many out here would vote for...
...Hawai'i.

After all, we were annexed into the U.S. in the first place under some rather questionable circumstances involving a detachment of Marines.

http://www.hawaii-nation.org

"The cause of Hawaii and independence is larger and dearer than the life of any man connected with it. Love of country is deep-seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station."
- Lili`uokalani, Hawaii's last Queen

"This is a historical issue, based on a relationship between an independent government and the United States of America, and what has happened since and the steps that we need to take to make things right."
- Republican Governor Linda Lingle
(!!! -- too bad she was just pandering for Hawaiian votes -Ed.) , January 2003

"The recovery of Hawaiian self-determination is not only an issue for Hawaii, but for America. ... let all of us, Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian, work toward a common goal. Let us resolve ... to advance a plan for Hawaiian sovereignty."
- Democratic Governor Ben Cayetano

Of couse not everyone in the sovereignty movement supports full independence; many others merely want Federal recognition similar to what most American Indians already have. You'll never in a million, billion years guess which party is blocking this in the Senate...

...my, how time flies.

States to merge? Find two adjacent ones with two Repuke senators each and merge 'em! Idaho and Wyoming snap to mind.

146. Texas
to become a whole different country, preferably one without diplomatic relations with the United States (closed borders). I was going to say "give it Mexico" but that would be unfair to our neighbors to the south.
