A gift is a gift. Honesty isn't always the best policy. :)

Always accept with grace.
There have been some exceptions, such as an expensive pair of jeans that I specifically asked for, but I asked for the wrong size, my bad. I exchanged for the proper size.

Unless the gift-giver isn't there to see you....
I didn't mention in that thread...that when I was a child
...my Grandmother ALWAYS sent me a SLIP for Christmas. EVERY YEAR. It was ALWAYS at LEAST TWO SIZES too big, and they laid there, in a white silky pile, in my bottom drawer for YEARS.My mother always made me write a "thank you note" for the "lovely slip".
:puke:
When we got older, my Grandmother would send my Mother a check for $25.00 with instructions to magnanimously distribute it amongst us pagan grandchildren ($5.00 EACH!). When I was out of the house (19)... I stopped writing the thank you notes when my Mother gave me my generous gift from her mother.
Well, one missed year, and she stopped sending me the $5!!
SO, I SENT HER a check for $5.00...and the witch sent me a "thank you note".
NOTE: My Grandparents were very well off, and spent hundreds of dollars on my cousins every year. We were never given gifts because we "couldn't be trusted with NICE things".
I tell my kids today, if you WANT something from an out of town relative, you HAVE to write a thank you note. If you DON'T give a crap...DON'T write the note, but don't expect anything, either.
I firmly believe that gift-giving should come from the heart, and anyone who demands obeisance for a "gift" should SUCK IT.
At least my flannel night gown was given out of love....

My very religious, racist, homophobic, get arrested at pro life demonstrations every year...Aunt and Uncle give us "pagan children" religious books, fliers, pins, ornaments. Every year......I just know one of these days the ornament will be so wonderful I will convert back to Catholism......(sarcasm) really no smiley?
That is not from the heart
At least when I get granny panties from my mom, I know she is just thinking I need underwear and she isn't trying to change my beliefs.

If somebody gives me a gift with a not so hidden agenda behind it like you should go to church or the time I was involved with someone who would get ideas from one of his brothers who couldn't maintain a relationship then I reserve the right to say something.

I do it every year when my in-laws give me something like a can of Cappuccino they bought for a dollar at the local discount market. Why be an ass about it? Some people either don't give a shit enough about you to bother or they just suck at buying presents.
I always try to get them something nice that they will actually appreciate and use and is unique to their personalities. The fact they don't do the same for me doesn't really bother me.

11. I gave my mom a special fruit basket each year until she finally told me it really |
|
didn't taste any better than the stuff she bought in the store - up until then she had told me they were fantastic - so in that case I appreciated the honesty!
