Wii and Netflix/Hulu - can I stream movies thru this? |
|
Because if I can I'm ditching cable except the basic 13 channels. I have not had my cable box hooked up for 2 weeks now and honestly, not missing it except the occassional desire to watch movies. If I could get Hulu and Netflix working thru my Wii (I have it connected to the WiFi in my house) then I would abandon the cable box all together and go with the basic 13 channels.
Anyone done this?

1. Looks like NetFlix is in the works for a hardware-based thingy |
|
http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/netflix-streaming-purportedly-hitting-nintendos-wii-next/There's a service that does both Hulu & Netflix as well as other stuff: http://www.playon.tv/blog/playon-launches-wii-betaI would do some more research. Try sites like Gizmodo, Engadget, CNet and other tech-oriented places.

2. I stream Netflix through the Xbox 360 |
|
it does require a subscription to Xbox live, but there's no additional charge from Netflix to stream. There's also a streaming device called the Roku that streams Netflix as well as a few other services (Amazon on demand?).

4. Yeah, but you need aftermarket software to do it. |
|
Netflix is working on a deal with Nintendo to go it officially, but it's not ready yet and there's no ETA.

5. We've been streaming Netflix through a PS3 ... |
|
... and it works quite well. I'm not sure you can do that with a Wii though.

I recommend these films so enthusiastically. Each one was so brilliant and honest and emotional. Each one seemed better than the next. Not only are there some real finds on Netflix (and Hulu) but you have to be sure and see them before they expire, which they do. (check out their soon to expire list)
back on topic ... I am sure by the end of this thread, you will have a solution!

you can download just about every movie ever made. and you can download new movies before they ever get released to video.

10. Supposedly you can use Hulu if you have the newest version of the Nintendo browser. |
|
Opera finally upgraded the Flash support on the Wii browser to 9 when they pushed the latest update a few months ago, and the Flash 7 limitation was the only reason the sites didn't work (YouTube, which has a 7 fallback, has always worked fine). I haven't upgraded my browser yet, so I can't say from personal experience, but there's no reason why Hulu shouldn't work if the Flash 9 support is finally there.
Netflix is a different story. Netflix uses Microsoft Silverlight streaming, which doesn't have an open API. Without access to the player source, there's no way Opera, Nintendo, or anyone other than Microsoft can write a plugin for an entirely new hardware platform like the Wii. Microsoft isn't going to be in any hurry to help the competition.

Yes, I use Playon ( http://www.playon.tv/index.php) with my Wii and WiFi. You can watch Netflix and, and with the right plugins, most everything else. The downside is there is no HD. The upside is it is cheap.
