High school straight girl crush
I had a thing for her for two years straight. She knew how I felt, and it didn't undermine our friendship at all, but she was...straight. She wrote me the sweetest message in my grade 12 yearbook....about what an amazing person she thought I was and how much she would miss me.

I'm in university now. And still, everytime I talk to her, my heart skips a beat.

1. :)
Hang on to that. No matter what else happens in your life, or who else you fall in love with, you'll always be able to look back on that relationship (even though it wasn't quite how you wanted it) and smile.

I know it sounds cheesy but trust me, the older you get, the more you'll see it.

2. I was friends with a gay guy when I was in junior high
In 7th grade I was new to the school and he was the first person to welcome and befriend me. We drifted apart when we went to highschool and in our junior year he came out, which was a very brave thing to do considering the type of community we lived in. I don't know if he ever thought of me in any terms other than friendship and I was shocked to learn that he was gay. I wasn't all that evolved as a person at the time.

He was treated like a leper. No one would talk to him unless they had to, let alone be friends with him. He did not dress for gym. I'm sure a kind word from someone would have meant a lot at the time, but I wasn't brave or open enough for it to come from me. That was in the late 80s and I don't know if we've come very far since then. Probably not.
