I think that is so cute!
I haven't seen anything quite like that before.

3. Thank Gawd Newton didn't live in 21st century America. |
|
The System here would've found some way to stifle his non-conformity, put the kibosh on his experiments and probably arrest him for stealing apples!!!

4. Taking apples off the ground is not stealing.. |
|
Didn't you learn that as a kid living next door to a man with an apple tree that got mad when the neighborhood kids took his apples. Oh, I guess that was me and that was our excuse for taking his apples.

5. LOL! My friend's mom had the best apple tree ever, so we didn't need to steal! |
|
But when I lived in England in the 70s, we "apple scrumped" a lot! Seeing as apples are the only fruit that grow well on that bloody, soggy island, grabbing a few didn't seem really sinful like the Garden of Eden or anything!
The dif between me and Newton? Apple falling on my head would've just made me hungry. Some people just have unfettered minds: makes you wonder how many potential Newtons, Einsteins, Marconis, Bells, et al are being pounded into conformity right now. Especially in this anti-intellectual, anti-science country we live in!

6. Couldn't agree more about the conformity and anti-science country. |

When I was a little girl we were not allowed to take the neighbor man's apples but we would loan our bikes to the poor kids who lived next door to us so they could get the 'green apples' off the tree and make their get away. Sour green apples with an unhealthy dose of salt on them was a welcome summer treat for us. Later we moved a couple of blocks down and lived next to the man and had apple trees of our own, and the neighborhood kids would take our apples while we watched out the window. Our rule was if they picked them up off the ground or off the lower branches it was okay. Just as long as they didn't hurt the trees.
So you are from England. I envy you. I wish I had somewhere to go to when things get bad here. And since I like the rain, I might prefer that soggy island to this whatever it is.

10. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm actually from Baltimore, but I was raised in San Francisco. |
|
I went to London after high school, on a supposed "summer backpacking trip." But instead of coming home, I stayed. For five years.
I consider it the equivalent of a college education--although 5 yrs is a little long, unless you're Sarah Palin. Anyway, I can diss the Brits and their soggy weather as well as their soggy food, but living there gave me a unique perspective and I'll never be sorry I did it. But I'm done with Cold Europe. I prefer Italy and the Med to the North Sea these days. And--although it's sad in a way--everyone on the Continent speaks English now, so we could ostensibly live anywhere and thrive.
It is true that America insists on adherence to The System, in a way that Europe doesn't. Eccentrics do very well in England, creative types aren't beat down by crazy fundies and the Market-based culture we have here. I think all young American people should be mandated to travel to another country, to open their minds. But of course, that would defeat the purpose of controlling an ignorant populous, wouldn't it??

13. As an eccentric I probably should have went to Europe when |
|
I was young. Both my adult kids want to go there now, but of course wanting to and being able to are two different things.
Sounds like you had an interesting youth. As far as Cold Europe, if it is as cold as it is here, then I don't want that either. I can do without single digit temperatures right now. Did not mind it when I was young, in fact I kind of liked it, but now that I am old and have old bones I could do without the cold. Tropics sound good to me these days. ;)
