How many concussions have you had? |
|
"Concussions range in significance from minor to major, but they all share one common factor — they temporarily interfere with the way your brain works. They can affect memory, judgment, reflexes, speech, balance and coordination.
Usually caused by a blow to the head, concussions don't always involve a loss of consciousness. In fact, most people who have concussions never black out. Some people have had concussions and not even realized it.
Concussions are common, particularly if you play a contact sport such as football. But every concussion, no matter how mild, injures your brain. This injury needs time and rest to heal properly. Luckily, most concussions are mild and people usually recover fully." from Mayo Clinic
I figure I have had about a dozen. From fully knocked out and waking up 30 seconds later to just getting the ole bell rung and having tunnel vision and hearing the choir.
I wonder what it has done to me. I have a seizure every year or two. I also wonder if I lost IQ or some executive function or some other thing.

5. I hadn't watched or been to a rodeo in about 20 years |
|
last year took a German friend to one in Willcox and was surprised to see several of the bull riders wearing helmets and some kind of neck protection. Still not sure how I feel about that - not sure how I feel about rodeo for that matter, but it was interesting to see that.

Curveball to the temple, and helmet to helmet tackle. Both times I was out cold for about a minute. Back then they just told you to go dunk your head in the water bucket and get back on the field.
I'm glad to see them taking it a little more seriously these days.

I probably seem as though I've had several. ;)
Sorry you're going through this. I hope, for your peace of mind at the very least, you'll talk with a doctor about these concerns. Good luck!

9. Four - got knocked out with two, the others were minor |
|
Though the only one that actually had bone damage was when I hit the back of my head on an oak tree after getting knocked down by a horse.
Since the last one I 'lose' words when I get tired - I know that I know the word, I just cannot retrieve it. And I believe that the anesthesia from the operations I have had over the years added to the cumulative effect of the concussions. I know my balance has been off since the extended shoulder surgery in 1993, though that could be partly from the months with the use of only one arm.
Getting old sucks and getting old with injuries sucks worse. The alternative is much worse, though.

Knocked me out cold. I walked home and slept on the couch. That's all I can remember--- didn't go to the hospital.

15. 2 medically confirmed, 2 unconfirmed. |
|
I've been knocked out twice in my life due to high speed impact with unforgiving objects like trees and concrete. Both times my injuries elsewhere stole the focus of medical attention, but the doctors said "yeah, you may have a mild concussion too, so watch for dizzy spells and call us if you vomit." Rural healthcare in America isn't what it should be.
The 2 confirmed concussions were both from falling in some fashion and hitting the back of my head on steel. You should try it sometime. I think you'll find it a pleasant alternative to listening to Sarah Palin speak. :)

I fell pretty hard on my head after attempting to dunk a basketball. Didn't have any of the normal symptoms, although I was dizzy for a bit.
