Happy National Engineers Week to all DU engineers!
www.eweek.org

A tribute to those who make our lives easier, safer, and in some cases leave us scratching our heads.
Thank you for your dedication to the profession. :hi:

1. Thanks.
A 'few' years ago when I was in high school, I was talking with a family friend who was an engineer. He told me that if I was going to study engineering, I should buy the best slide rule I could, because I'd be using it all my professional life. I still have it. Tow sons, both engineers. I don't know how my wife has kept her sanity.

2. My calculator is almost 30!
It was the last calculator I ever bought.

4. I think it's been 20 years
since I have even seen one of those! My last one died, and in many ways, I don't really miss the reverse-Polish notation. I know some people thrived on it, but I found it cumbersome and confusing most of the time.

Then again, I'm just a "lowly" draftsman, so what do I know? :P

5. RPN is the best!
I never would have survived materials science without it as some of those formula were extremely long and convoluted (nested). But mostly I just use the Google calculator or Grpn these days. If I require more then I bring up matlab or a spreadsheet.

I keep a slide rule in the car for figuring gas mileage. :)

6. I figure gas mileage in my head to the third decimal place as I drive
:P
Or course, it takes a few minutes, but that's what I do ;)

As for calculating, I let AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010 or ESRI ArcMap 9.3.1 do all that tedious stuff for me

7. my favorite engineering joke
A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer were all given a red rubber ball and told to find the volume.

The mathematician carefully measured the diameter and evaluated a triple integral.

The physicist filled a beaker with water, put the ball in the water, and measured the total displacement.

The engineer looked up the model and serial number in his red-rubber-ball table.

8. Mine.
An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress.

The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship.

The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there.

The engineer said, "I like both." "Both?" Engineer: "Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can go to the lab and get some work done."

10. I have one, but you won't like it...
:P

Company Benefits

A large engineering company in Nigeria recently hired several cannibals to work in its piping dept.

"You are all part of our team now", said the HR rep during the welcoming briefing.

"You get all the usual benefits and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat, but please don't eat any of our employees".

The cannibals promised they would not.

Four weeks later the HR Manager remarked,

"You're all working very hard and I'm satisfied with your work. However, one of our Designers has disappeared. Do any of you know what happened to him?"

The cannibals all shook their heads "No".

After the boss had left, the leader of the cannibals said to the others, "Which one of you idiots ate that Designer?"

A hand rose hesitantly.

"You fool!" the leader continued. "For four weeks we've been eating Engineers and no one noticed a thing. But NOOOooo, you had to go and eat someone who actually does something."

until the Aggies "absorbed" them ;)
My father got his degree in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&I :)
