Faces of America on PBS... |
|
Anyone watching this series where they take famous people are trace their ancestors and came to the U.S.
Interesting tidbits I've learned from it:
Before 1952 the only immigrants who could become citizens were blacks and whites, not Orientals, etc.
When Arabs first immigrated here in the late 19th century they weren't treated with the same contempt as other immigrants but in order to become citizens they had to go before courts to argue that they were white.

3. Haven't seen it in Mississippi... |
|
I'm guessing that our state affiliate couldn't afford to air it... we got a rerun of Ken Burn's National Park series instead...

I loved Christie Yamaguchi's stunned reaction when she saw her grandfather being described as "yellow."

The third will be aired 8:00-9:00 p.m., Wednesday, on many PBS stations. It will be about the ancestry of Meryl Streep and Eva Longoria. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/facesofamerica/
