Poll question: Your opinion on trepanning, (aka - drilling a hole in your head) |
Trepanning, also known as trephination, is the art of boring a hole in the skull for medical, mystical, or, God help us, recreational purposes. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2413/whats-the-story-on-trepanation

2. I saw a program about it years ago. Could NOT believe my eyes and ears. |
Kids doing it, in unsantitary conditions, to cure depression. They literally, drilled a hole through the top of their skull. :wtf:

21. It could have been. There was a group trying to get the practice shut down, and they went |
to a house where a young girl was having it done for depression. It was crazy.

Gizmo seen here! http://www.museoroperu.com.pe/This report says 90% survived the trepanation. I tried to interview them, but couldn't find any. http://schansblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/incan-brain-surgery.html

The actual cure-ratio might be another matter...

18. Uh-huh. Su-u-ure they did. |
The Inca had no written language. How can we possible know could we know how many were actually cured? It's not like they left records. And anyway, drilling into ones head only works for a limited set of disorders and madness is not one of them. I suppose checking skulls for regrowth will tell you how many survived IF you can be sure you've found them all.

8. It depends. If done by a professional it could save your life. |
But if you're talking a DIY project then I'd probably discourage it.

permanently as your brain decayed or what ever it did. I guess everyone needs a hobby, but it's probably not for me.
Thanks for the thought, though. (I also recall a news story about a guy who killed himself by drilling a dozen holes in his head with an electric drill.)
Good night, dear - I have a headache. mark

30. Only for cases of political uncertainty |
If you THINK you might be a Republican, but are not sure, go to a Political Uncertainty Clarification Center. There you will be trepanned. The doctor will then look into the hole with a flashlight. If he sees a brain--congratulations! You're not a Republican!
