We need a Woody Guthrie/Bob Dylan/Bruce Springsteen for today.

Maybe there is one, except s/he doesn't get air play on MSM radio stations.

Anyone know of someone like this?

4. But Dylan, AFAIK, doesn't write politicial stuff as he used to.

Springsteen does, but I have to say I don't keep up with his stuff as much as I used to.

Also he doesn't get the airplay he used to.

5. Some of my favorite contemporary politically minded musicians:
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 11:26 AM by SteppingRazor
Billy Bragg, The Nightwatchman, The Coup, and -- especially -- Michael Franti.

Sure, they don't get much play on the radio, but there is so much good music out there now, with bands able to market themselves online. It's just that the consumer has to do a lot more work, finding the stuff they like instead of just hearing what gets played on the radio.

On edit: Here's a few videos:

"Yell Fire" by Michael Franti
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh-8mw9MKbQ

"Sweet Little Lies" by Franti
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1tFCQJV_5E

"The Road I Must Travel" by The Nightwatchman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrBfPLUm5so

The first two videos are just the music and lyrics. The last, the Nightwatchman video, is the actual music video for the song -- and it is very, very worth watching. Great stuff.

9. Keith Greeninger to name just one.

Arsenal of Doves makes me cry and all his music gives the the chills. I love Breaking Through, too. I wish he had All Who Have on there to listen to. The symbolism he uses in it is incredible and meshes into what I would call nearly the perfect song.

He also works in the schools teaching the kids to play and sing. He's totally incredible!

There are many, many out there who, like you said, don't get mainstream media play, but they're out there bustin' ass and singin' their hearts out. And I've found them all by not listening to the crap on MSM. Listen to independent stuff to find them.

:hi:
