hotels in DC and NYC
Can anyone recommend decent simple hotels in NYC and DC that aren't astronomical in price? Two young wait-staff people we've met (from India) would like to visit these 2 cities for their first time, but will clearly be on a tight budget. They will not have a car, so public transport is a must.

We stay with relatives when we visit, so I am clueless to recommend anything.

Thanks in advance for any advice or leads.....

Mikita

1. Call the Club Quarters
you can usually get rates pretty cheap with them.

3. For DC, stay in Maryland or Virginia
In Gaithersburg, MD there are reasonably priced hotels with shuttle service to the Shady Grove Metro station on the Red Line. It takes about an hour to get to downtown DC.

Here is a link to one. I've never stayed there and don't know what it's like.

5. Carlton Arms in NY
Very old school... rates vary based on shared or private bath. But each room has been uniquely decorated by an artist, so your guests can enjoy a unique experience... check it out: http://www.carltonarms.com/

7. Just keep a tight line on your reservations
I made a reservation six weeks in advance, and they don't ask for a credit card to hold it or anything. A week or so before I was to arrive, I called just to double check, and they said that I should have checked back with them earlier, and since I didn't, they rented the room to someone else, and were booked up otherwise. They claim they told me this, but I don't recall it -- but I admit, my memory sucks, so they probably did tell me to.

I don't really blame them, but it was a bummer, and I ended up at a bad HoJo in Brooklyn.

I think if your friends just call and email every week or so until they actually arrive, they'll be OK.

9. They can probably find less expensive rooms in DC...
but the Hilton Embassy Row is really nice, excellent location (Dupont Circle) and from $109/night. Not cheap, but they'd be near EVERYTHING and I've stayed there before - it feels like a nice small boutique hotel, not a huge awful Hilton monolith. I honestly loved it, and was surprised at the price, considering it was Dupont Circle in DC. This hotel will most likely be more expensive during the weeknights, though, to cash in on business travelers. The best rates tend to be Friday/Saturday, maybe Sunday nights.

But make sure it's the Embassy Row one on Massachusetts Ave, - not the one on Connecticut - the one on Connecticut is a zoo.
2015 Massachusetts Avenue NW
Washington, District of Columbia, USA, 20036

Priceline also has a Days Inn on Connecticut Ave. for $69.

10. Worked in DC for awhile. Stayed for awhile in the vicinity of the Watergate...
.
... in what was a SWEET housesitting deal for the person who put me up.
.
Told me that all the neighbors were either high-level coke dealer/importers.
.
Or diplomats.
.
Often both.
.
Can't beat that neighborhood.
