We have had a colder then normal winter but it hasn't hurt the weeds, the yard is full of them. |
|
The ony thing green in the yard is weeds, everything else is dead or sleeping until spring.
I just cut the weeds last week and I have to cut again.
It was 28 here in December didn't hurt the weeds.
The temp has been in the 30's and 40's and the weeds keep growing.
We have some strong Texas weeds.

1. Do what I do. Don't rake the leaves. |
|
They kill everything, the weeds, the grass... At least I won't have to mow the grass. ;-)
In the olden days in the south people used to sweep the yard. Sweep the dirt so it looked nice and orderly. No grass. I'd like to go back to that.

2. The grass is dead, brown and dead. |
|
The native plants didn't do so well because of the cold weather in December.
My norfork pines took a hit, the really tall ones will recover in the summer.
Hurricane Ike didn't hurt them but this cold did.
My two ceder trees did will, but most of the plants are dead for now.
It will take a few months to see what will recover.
I will be careful what I will replant.

3. We had a couple of serious cold snaps on the gulf coast. |
|
Mid to upper 20s at night. I see a lot of dead (non-native) palms in yards. I gave up on having a real lawn because of all the oak tree surface roots a while back.
Oddly enough, we do now have an excellent crop of mosses now. Wish I could get the whole yard in moss. Nice and green and you don't have to mow it.

4. I don't really mind cutting the grass. |
|
I won't replant anything that can't take the cold.
I did cut the dead tops off everything, the roots may still be alive.
I will have to do some work on the pines, cut of the worst of the dead limbs.
New limbs will grow when it gets hot and humid.
The smaller norfork pines may not make it, time will tell.
I need more frost covers for the plants.

5. My weeds are buried under a couple feet of snow. |

I hope they die but I know they won't.

6. Snow wouldn't kill these weeds. |
|
Weeds are amazing.
It was in the low 40's when I cut the weeds last time, the mower didn't want to start.

7. winter annuals don't care about the cold |
|
they just need some moisture. We have 2 kinds of mustard (rocket), cheese weed, and foxtail barley coming up. Oh and where I fed some oat hay last year, that is coming up too, although the horses and rabbits are keeping it pretty short.
It was 24 here the other night, froze our pipes. I have parsley volunteering in the garden and oregano haning in there too.
