As a lifelong Jimi fan, I'm sorry...his "Sunshine Of Your Love" sucks, always has, always will |
|
This new "Hendrix Family" release, "Valleys of Neptune," with one of the big selling points being YET ANOTHER VERSION of "Sunshine of Your Love."
Jimi beat that song with a fucking stick, obliterated any subtleties in the original, just wanked and riffed and that's IT. It's not even the song, just an excuse for him to solo loosely on the riff.
Can't wait to see the next round of scrapings from the bottom of the barrel.

3. I know I won't be able to resist listening to the new CD... |
|
...but reading between the lines of the three star Rolling Stone review, it sounds like more of the "couple of hot tracks padded out with filler" crap.

Jimi was a brilliant guitarist. An absolute legend deserving of every accolade he ever got. But, overall his music sucked. I find 99% of his music unlistenable.

6. I know people who don't like him at all |
|
My attorney likes ALL of the late 60s / early 70's stuff from Quicksilver, the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis, The Doors...and his standard response for Jimi is "I never understood the appeal."

5. The Bill Graham "Band of Gypsys" story |
|
As I've mentioned here before, the late Bill Graham used to occasionally do weekend "Guest DJ" stints at legendary KSAN San Francisco. He'd tell all of these great stories, and one of them was about the "Band of Gypsys" album.
That concert had an early and late set. At the early set, Jimi was doing all of the "showman" stuff, waggling his tongue and humping and playing behind his neck and all of the off-the-wall stuff you can see in a million video clips.
When he came off stage, Graham basically told him he'd just delivered a clown show, that he was so much better than the dry-humping crap he'd just tossed off.
So the second set came, and we got "Machine Gun," one of the most terrifying tracks of his career. He then cam off-stage after the concert and approached a beaming Bill Graham and glared at him. "HAPPY NOW, motherfucker?"
True story.

it's dull. If I want to hear Jimi rock the instrumental I'll listen to Hush Now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0gb29KYsrI&feature=related.
