Food Wars Buffalo (Travel Channel) - The right chicken wing won (spoilers) |
|
New show premiered tonight on Travel Channel called Food Wars, and the premier episode was Anchor Bar vs Duff's in a Buffalo Wing battle. As a resident here, I have to say that I was thrilled Duff's, my local place, took down the Anchor Bar.
Of course, now I want some wings...

1. Did anybody stuff way too many wings down their face and puke? |
|
If its on the travel channel it has to have excessive binge eating.

2. I've been there on two occasions with my friends while visiting B-lo |

That was quite an experience. Definitely the hottest food I've ever had, but great. Having never made it to Anchor Bar, I'm glad Duffs took home the honors; I needed like ten glasses of loganberry that night.

I was born and raised in Buffalo and visit there often, and somehow I've never had Anchor Bar wings. Duff's, plenty of times.
Here's a question for a fellow Buffalonian: have you ever had good wings OUTSIDE of Buffalo? I regularly check them out when I see them on a restaurant menu, and they're never like "the real thing."
That mystifies me, because people in Buffalo make them at home, and every pizza place there does a decent job with them, too. What is so hard about deep-frying chicken wings and rolling them in melted butter + Frank's Hot Sauce? I've had mealy wings, sweet wings, and wings without blue cheese (sacrilege!) outside of Buffalo (some of them tasty in their own way), but never the chicken wings I'm familiar with.
Have you had Anchor Bar wings, and if so, what's the difference between them and what you get at Duff's?
Okay, now I, too, am jonesin' for some wings.

6. No idea why it is true, but I tend to avoid wings outside of Buffalo |
|
The only exceptions are usually at a Bills' bar where the cooks/owners are Buffalonians.
My assumption is that most places assume the sauce is just a bottle of hot sauce and don't know how to get the vinegar, butter, etc. right (Or they just fry the wings to dehydration).
I've eaten at Anchor Bar, as well. The difference really is the moisture (Duff's are quite as dry in the meat area) and the way the sauce is handled. Duff's goes for a full sauce bath while Anchor Bar wings tend to be "naked" in places.

8. you have to roll them in butter before the sauce? |
|
does that help keep the sauce on. I try to make them at home by just baking or bbqing the wings and then throwing them in a bowl with franks hot sauce.
