Everything else (arts, sciences) are concretely specific and external. This one is ethereal and grabs from the inside, can transform the crummiest dive into a shimmering place. Or whatever it wants to transform into.

1. Personally, I think toilet paper is the single greatest achievement
But music is pretty good, too. :)

Actually, I drive for a living and I have satellite radio in my truck. Music has always been my companion out on the road. I think I'd go bonkers without it.

4. What channels do you listen to, Tobin?
I like the Bridge, Classic Vinyl, 70s on 7, Blue Collar Comedy, Real Jazz, and another that I can't remember right now, that introduced me to Melody Gardot.

6. I like rock-n-roll in most forms
My first five pre-sets are Alt Nation, Octane, Hair Nation, Liquid Metal, and Boneyard. Those usually keep me happy, but I'll also venture into the pop channels sometimes as well. My next five pre-sets are all news and lefty talk radio, but I rarely listen to them- usually just on a big news day.

And without it, my life would be empty.

10. right.
It strikes a chord that is within all of us and resonates. the fact that a baby instinctively moves to the beat proves that it's a primal thing. Like sex and hunger.

14. The movie 'O Brother, Where Out Thou' really portrays it...
the best. But this achievement is played over and over in all the different cultures. Music can truly sway the savage beast/breast.
Music (manipulated sound) is a cultural universal.

15. All living things are systems ot repeating alternatiing opposing...
imbalances. Too much of one thing followed by too little of the same, followed by too much, then too little again, etc. Something is alive when it manages to maintain these imbalances within some reasonable parameters, a condition called a "rhythm". All living things maintain their rhythm, seeking not stasis, which is death, but harmony with all other systems and their rhythms. This harmony is the moment of grace, something the earthworm, the sand flea, the trout, the cuckoo, the elephant and the whale know often. Man, however, is so burdened by artifice and false notions and pointless goals, that we rarely have such moments and to remind us that they are possible and to remind us how they feel, we listen to music.

16. Depends on how you define "MUSIC."
If you define it by what this guy produces, then no...MISIC is NOT the single greatest achievement of humankind. That would be spaying and neutering, something this boy's parents should have seriously considered.

I would vote Literature as being the greatest social construct as it can achieve everything music can in addition to orders of magnitude more...

21. I could easily do without music for the rest of my life because
quite frankly, I'm not much of a fan of other people's singing (or my own, for that matter). I liked rock as a kid, but hated country, rap, disco, pop, classical and everything else you can think of (and still do). Today's more prevalent types of popular music are particularly revolting.

I much prefer comedy to music, as well as drama. I'd much rather see a play, a movie or a TV show than hear any song or go to any concert.

Recording thought and speech in physical form may seem ordinary today, but 6000 years ago it was seen as magical. it has even transformed our brains, the left occipito-temporal region (where objects are recognized) is significantly rewired in heavy readers compared to illiterate people.
