Things you would rather do than listen to Rush? (the band)
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 05:51 PM by mcctatas
my bestie would rather "gargle with urine" (ok, not the word she said). For my part, I would rather sit through one of Debi's R-Patz porno threads

*edited for clarification :P

1. Rush the band or Rush the hate radio host?
As to the latter, I'd rather be thrown naked into a Turkish prison. I'd rather lance an infected hemorrhoid with a plastic party fork. I'd rather roll naked in nettles. The band -- meh.

7. Not very damn much! I listen to a lot of Rush, and have for 20+ years.
One of the best goddamn bands ever, and I'm getting sick and tired of the childish hate being tossed on 'em.

If you don't like 'em, that's fine, but at least have the honesty admit that they ARE hella good musicians, even if they do stuff you don't like.

Hell, I have the integrity to do that with the folks whose music I don't like but who are, clearly, very much talented on their instruments and musicianship.

27. I was surprised by the OP.
I would have thought that DUers, being a rather cerebral, above-the-rabble bunch, would admire a progressive, creative band that refuses to compromise their musical integrity for any kind of trend or cliche, and always have. No AutoTune hijinks in any Rush song!

It's true that Rush is something of a "musicians' band", and it may be that non-musicians have a hard time understanding what they have achieved. Others may lack the patience or interest to actually listen attentively to the music. Many people use music as sonic wallpaper and basically are going for "easy listening". Rush is not really in the "easy listening" category, choosing instead to actually challenge the listener.

The writing, the arranging, the performing, the recording - all top notch, every time. What's not to like?

30. I think you're right. And also some emotional silliness in reaction to Rush's assumed fan base
I think there are some 'progessives' here who don't like the music because Rush is imagined to have picked up a huge redneck, conservative/libertarian fan base.

But this is DU, where we have a bunch of people who choose the music (or movies) they like (or dislike) solely by the politics of the performer, and not on the merits of the art itself. Fucking stupid, I know, but that's the way it goes.

And in America, especially since Reagan's America, where "thinking" has become an evil, I *do* think it's the musicianship that turns people off - as you say, most people consume (and I use consume deliberately) their art as background, as soundtrack to their life, but never actually listen/watch/get deeply involved in it, and so music like Rush (or Zappa or Yes or ELP, etc., or, hell, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler) that demands that they actually pay attention, becomes something to hate.

Zappa summed it up nicely in his Real Frank Zappa book when he mocked the general American musical consumer as being something like "That beat - that beat right there. I like that beat. Give me more of that beat. I can clap to that, and that means it's good."

31. There actually is a strange, right-wing Rush contingent.
I have a liberal friend who is a Rush fanatic. One Rush board he posts on is apparently dominated by right-wing types, so the political discussions there tend to be somewhat unsavory.

I can't imagine why right-wingers would like Rush, of all bands. Aren't they more into Toby Keith? Country music is so much easier to "get". If you're smart enough to like Rush, shouldn't you be smart enough to not be a conservative?

Ultimately, there are two kinds of music - good music and bad music. Rush is good music, even if a few bad people like them.

41. Very early Rush, when Neil Peart first joined the band, his lyrics were
sometimes (not often) influenced by Ayn Randian ideas.

2112 was based on Rand's "Anthem," IIRC.

And then there's "The Trees":

9. I would rather drink a cup of dumpster sludge from behind a restaurant.
And not just a wee coffee cup either. But a huge friggin Big Gulp from 7-11.

Just to put things in perspective.

And to be fair, it's not just Rush. Hell, I'd drink a cup for Journey or Foreigner too. And certainly for Boston. Oh, and Bob Seeger. Not to mention Ted Nugent and Van Halen.

Guess I could go on, but that doesn't seem to be the point of this thread.

You lump Rush in with Journey and Foreigner? Ted Nugent? Van Halen? WTF? Are we talking about the same band?

Have you never heard them? Are you a Philistine? There has to be some explanation for the wildly off-base comparisons you make.

I like "Tom Sawyer." I much rather listen to that song than gargle urine or any such thing.

Rush the hate radio guy, though, I'd gargle urine rather than listen to that, he is truly vile, sexist, racist asshole.
