My 2 cents about McNabb, Kolb and the Eagles |
|
First and foremost, it was time that we moved on from Donovan McNabb. McNabb was much harder to lose because you genuinely liked the guy unlike his predecessor Randall Cunningham (he ended up being a real prick and most could not wait to see him gone). I wish McNabb went to the AFC or at least to a team where we wouldn't have to play against him twice in one season but that trade is what it is.
However, I will say this here right now - Kevin Kolb is NOT the future of the Eagles. I suspect he will be another Bobby Hoying who will probably be benched partway thru the season and ( *gasp* ) probably replaced by Michael Vick. Kolb is not someone you build your NFL team with but someone who makes a solid backup and stellar bench warmer. I'm not overly keen about Vick being our starter. Yes, flame all you want about what he has done and I will reply with what he is trying to do (in regards to his personal life) but I think Vick's best years are behind him too.
So I do suspect that the Eagles will have at least 2 years growing pains where I hope we come close to breaking .500 record. But I hope that we find our next Cunningham/McNabb out there in the draft that can bring us some great years ahead! It won't be Kolb, I just don't see him with the goods.
PS - I hope to goodness sake we don't draft that Tebow guy. Eagles fans aren't the most religious of folks other than "DEAR GOD WHY DID HE THROW THAT PASS" or "HOLY SHIT I CAN'T BELIEVE HE FUMBLED THAT BALL". Tebow would be a horrible fit with Eagles fans who would grow weary of his preaching when we would rather he focus on his playing. Tebow would do better in a Red State team where fans eat that stuff up like manna for the hungry - St Louis would be a perfect fit for him.

I remember reading a draft preview from 2000 that said Tom Brady "might turn into a decent backup, but nothing more". How'd that work out?

3. But for every Tom Brady you discover you'll go thru at least a dozen Bobby Hoyings |
|
There are way more Top rated Collegiate QBs that enter the draft every year than there are QB starting positions, let alone open QB slots. To me, Syracuse never seemed like an collegiate juggernaut for NFL QBs and yet McNabb has proven himself to be one of the best in the league and yet many schools that have collegiate juggernaut football teams rarely send top QBs into the NFL.
Honestly it's all a crap shoot. I could tell you that 5 is the unluckiest number of all time yet it still has the same chance as all the other numbers on the board to hit craps.

4. Kolb looks like a solid NFL QB |
|
the Eagles would have had McNabb for one more season, they were NOT going to resign him for big $$$. You may as well deal him for what you can get while the other NFL teams are under the delusion that McNabb is a great QB, which he isn't.

6. Frankly I think that Philly shot itself in the ass with the McNabb trade |
|
Furthermore they were rather harsh with him as well. The man works his whole career with subpar receivers, does well in spite of said shitty receiving corp, and now, when they finally have a good receiving corp, they trade McNabb to Washington.
You're right, Kolb isn't the man, and frankly neither is Vick. Vick's legs are getting old, and he was never a stellar passer. However I think that Philly isn't going to draft a QB this year, at least not the next franchise QB. I think without McNabb's leadership and passing ability, they're going fail to make the playoffs for the next couple of years, then Reid is either going to be fired or resign out of disgust(and I won't blame him) and some new coach is going to come in, clean house and rebuild the team. It's going to a good five years before Philly approaches anything near playoff status again, and that's if things go decently well.
Frankly as something of a Philly fan, I'm pissed at the front office. Really now, just when they had all the pieces they needed for a serious run at the Super Bowl this year, they go and toss away McNabb. What the fuck were they thinking? At this point I hope that McNabb and the 'Skins beat Philly like a drum every time they meet just to imprint upon the front office just how stupid they were.

7. I completely disagree about Kolb. |
|
He'll be able to do what D-Mac could never do, hit the slant in stride. He's can't throw it 80 yards down the field and he doesn't have a rocket arm but he'll have the touch and accuracy we need in this offense. He can make all the throws. He is young and inexperienced so there will be a certain amount of growing pains but I'm not worried about the offense at all. I could throw it to Jackson, Maclin, Celek and Avant. The Birds are stacked on offense. The defense is the real problem we have to worry about. That and the coach who, in my opinion, has been at fault for our coming up short in the big games far more than McNabb.
Tebow is not coming here. The Pats are most likely going to draft him. The Eagles are going to take a project QB in the later rounds.

8. oh, please tell me St Louis won't get Tebow |
|
I don't need that.
If they draft Bradford, no chance on taking Tebow.
I'm not a Rams fan (life-long Bears fan), but I do get subjected to Rams fans, and I REALLY don't want to hear them going on about Tebow.
Can't he be sent somewhere FURTHER south?
On the subject of Tebow, I kind of suspect he won't be a great NFL player. I could certainly be wrong, I'm no expert, but I get the impression that he just doesn't have what it takes to succeed as an NFL QB.

9. My two cents says that Tebow will be drafted by the Eaglets this year. |
|
Both Tebow and Vick run the same type of offense. Also Tebow will be able to give Vick day-to-day ministering that Tony Dungy cannot do everyday. Also, don't forget that Andy Reid's son need some of Tebow's ministering also.
BTW, You are just pissed with Cunningham, because he played for a year with the Cowboys!
