3. Yes, I own it all, but I have a preference for the guitar-oriented stuff |
|
Saw three Zappa shows.
1). The "Flo & Eddie" band, at Boston Music Hall. Pretty much filth-based comedy for an hour and a half with s few hot guitar solos. I have a special fondness for the "Zappa & Mothers: Fillmore 1971" album, but it's not my favorite Frank. OPENING ACT was CHUCK BERRY!
2). The "Roxy & Elsewhere" band...George Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ruth Underwood...AMAZING, just AMAZING. Yeah, the comedy bits were here too, but the virtuoso playing took first priority. OPENING ACT: A solo TOM WAITS.
3). The "Bongo Fury" band...Beefheart was the opening act, and unfortunately, he didn;t share the stage with Zappa, not even for a single song. At one point Frank tied his hair back into a ponytail, explaining that he needed to do so because "We're going to play some serious music now"...and fucking RIPPED through "Black Napkins." This was GUITAR NIGHT, Frank was really into playing solos and it was the dream Zappa guitar show to beat them ALL.

4. Respected his intelligence and his lyrics |
|
as well as his politics. However, never loved his music. I listened to it those rare times it was on the radio just to hear the funny bits, but I never had the urge to go out & buy a Frank Zappa album.

. I used to put on Frank when I'd realize that I was taking myself WAY too seriously. He had a way of reorganizing my priorities - leading me back to a better perspective on life through his irreverence for absolutely everything (escept his music) . I still don't understand the adulation of his guitar work. And I've never been a big fan of his instrumentals although, ironically, "The Grand Wazoo" is my all-time favorite album of his -- and there's only one song with lyrics on that (I believe). . "Baby Snakes" is an underrated music video and not even KNOWN to many, if not most. The concert footage is fun, the studio footage is fucking AMAZING, and that claymation is just awe-inspiring. . Never saw him. One of my many great live music disappointments... along with Ray Charles. .

6. Not a fanatic, but really like and appreciate the "whole" |
|
own a few albums (yes vinyl, I'm old, OK?) and cd's, not the whole catalog by far.
Some good music, some needs drug enhancement - some funny, sarcastic shit which I also love in general. Some good musicians I also liked - Scarlet Rivera and Jean Luc Ponty both come to mind right now, why violins this morning I'm not sure. Fiddle music playing on the radio???

His music isn't for me, and I don't much like his guitar playing either.
