relationships are full of compromises...
for example, my boyfriend didn't want to buy a house near a school but the house I fell in love with was pretty much right next to a school. Being the wonderful man that he is (or more to the point, getting sick of hearing me whine about it) and after my assurances that schools are actually quite peaceful to live near, he acquiesced. Today we were there for the inspection and this was the sight that passed before our eyes (four times in 4 hours):

the middle school marching band

1. Kick ass
That's awesome. All you need is some earplugs or a loud tv that you can leave on at all times, problem solved.

3. oh would that that were true...
my mom chatted up the band director and found out that from the end of April through Memorial day the various bands march ONCE AN HOUR, and they pass by the house more than once in every hour, I still can't stop laughing though

They'll change the route for safety the first time you try backing out of the garage as they pass.

11. I don't want to rain on your parade, but...
I live next to a school and it's nothing but traffic (parents) and kids screaming all day long. It's the traffic thing that really gets to me. Just about every student is driven to school, even though it's a neighborhood school. The elementary school starts at 8:30 and the kindergarten starts at 10:00. The kindergarten lets out at 12:30 and the elementary school lets out at 2:30. Nothing but traffic jams all day. Parents like to either block our driveway or even park in it. Living next to a school is not all that it's cracked up to be.

13. but on the plus side...
my 7 year old can walk to school, it's quiet 3 months of the year, the plows always get the roads near schools done early, and I love the house. Oh yeah, and then there's the band, how many people are lucky enough to have a mini parade past their house 6 times a day for 6 weeks? :P

Edited on Wed May-05-10 02:52 PM by Kat45
I have to avoid going out or coming home when school is about to start or end; the neighborhood is a total traffic jam. The town even makes some of the streets one way during school hours. And people do block the driveway.

15. My folks bought their Arizona home WAY outside of Tucson...
.
...on the very edge of a brand-new subdivision with nothing
in between them and the mountains but about 5-10 miles of
desert (and the interstate closer to the mountains than their
home). It was a normal neighborhood -- they shuddered at
the thought of all the illness/injury narratives at a retirement
community. Before they bought the house, they found that
right across the street (at a slightly lower elevation so as
not to block their view), a grade-school would soon be built.
.
They LOVED the idea enjoying the sound of children nearby.
.
Eventually, they found that they had been right.

17. Oh!! And a friend of mine lived right on one of the two main streets...
.
...in the very small town of West Chester, PA and he had
perhaps the only balcony on his block.
.
When they had parades, the "Judges' Platform" was set up
right in front of his balcony and all the performers in the
parade would stop there and put on a demonstration --
high school bands, drill teams, cute li'l Shriner cars, etc.
.
He threw the BEST parties... and we would all kick back
on his balcony and watch the shows from our front row
balcony seats.
.
At certain times during the performances, when it got
quiet, he would sigh and say, "High school cheerleaders...
just for ME!!!!!"
.

19. This is a great opportunity to abuse your home's placement.
-Wear hillbilly clothes and turn the hose upon any and all who walk past, shouting "Get off'n mah properTAY!"

-Strut around the yard in negligee asking the young men if they want to join your bake sale.

-Okay, so mebbe no one at all should take my advice, but at least I entertain myself.

26. They are FULL of compromise.
I would say that if one partner refuses to compromise on something the other partner wants or even NEEDS, then the relationship is going to have issues.

I'd agree with your husband, though, mostly because I don't really like school aged children.

all the football (as well as practices) all the track meets (I hate PA systems and starter guns) as well as any school event they might want to do during nice weather. Been here 20+ years and sometimes it still gets to me, but most of the time I can ignore it.

Edited to add, we are lucky when they start practicing the jr high/high school marching band, the weather is cold enough for our windows to be closed because they usually start at 8:10am on the dot everyday!

37. That IS a funny story!!
I live right behind a middle school, and around the corner from an elementary school. No marching bands, cause no school district in the DC area would be crazy enough to risk the traffic and put a bunch of kids in the streets with musical instruments. Sheer chaos would result. That said, I kind of enjoy the sound of the kids at recess and running around the practice field. There ARE the teenagers who sneak into the woods right behind the house, across the fence, to indulge in some activities that aren't so wholesome, but a shout at them to move on cause they're being watched usually stops THAT particular activity.

For the most part, it hasn't been so bad. And congrats on the house!
