4. This still makes me laugh DECADES later. |

. A fellow medic, LaVerne, usually exhibited a calm and dignified manner WAY beyond his years. Really nice guy, just obviously a background of culture and refinement. . Quirky guy, too -- his drink of choice was Richard's Wild Irish Rose Fortified Wine cut with grapefruit juice. . One time he came back from the field with a rash of small red marks around half his waistline and down his left hip. . Itched like CRAZY!!! . . He, of all people, didn't know what he had and, to our great amusement, the medic in charge that day told him that he had picked up some chiggers. . . "NO, SIR!!!", LaVerne barked FURIOUSLY. . We had never heard him raise his voice before, so there was a stunned silence. . "THE PROPER TERM FOR WHAT I HAVE, SIR..." . 'AND THE TERM I FULLY EXPECT TO HEAR YOU USE IN THE FUTURE..." . A long, LONG dramatic pause. . "THE PROPER TERM I FULLY EXPECT TO HEAR YOU USE IN THE FUTURE... ... ... ... IS CHEGROES" . And this very handsome, very dignified, VERY dark man broke into an enormous beaming grin. . . He maintained his dignity, though... by not whooping and hollering and holding his sides in laughter/pain like the rest of us. .

the clear kind, is what my wife uses on me when I get chiggers. Chiggers are by far the bug I hate the most, because you can't see them, and by the time you realize you have them, they are all ready dug in.

That's what we used when I was a kid. It was supposed to 'smother' them.

6. I know a method that provides temporary relief from the itching, but at a cost. |
|
Back when I worked power line construction, one of my crew chiefs used to attract the chiggers like crazy. All of us would have a dozen welts or so, and his legs would just be a mass of lumps from ankles to knees.
He used to hae to use the Clorox technique to get to sleep at night. Even when he bit down on a wadded-up washcloth, I could still hear hime screaming on the other side of the Motel wall.
Good times...good times.

12. Scary. There doesn't seem to be a good targeted treatment other than tweezers. |
|
Glad I don't know much about them.

10. very tiny bugs that you can't see. When they bite you they leave a welt |
|
about 3X as big as a mosquito and about ten times itchier. I used to rip my skin off as a kid scratching them. I live in Iowa. Not sure exactly where they show up.

Make the water as hot as you can stand it, fill the tub and soak in it until you can't take it any longer. You will have the cooked lobster look when you get out of the water but the itch will be gone.

11. Let me add that as a young parent I got my ass chewed |
|
by another parent who was unfamiliar with chiggers. When his little girl displayed the chigger welt he asked if I knew what it was. I said "chiggers" and he took it as a racial slur. After he ranted I went and got his wife and asked if she had heard of chiggers. She said sure and described the little bug and the bite.

essentially, nail polish.

Years ago my sis and I took a road trip ... http://www.gastons.com/After a wonderful dinner overlooking the river, my sister and I walked back to our room. I took the path closer to the river. Was MISERABLE for days! Tried every home cure and thought I would skin myself. I hate chiggers!
