I bought a bicycle today. Not in place of my vehicle, but for exercise |
|
it has probably been 25 years since I have had one.
I am giddy :)

1. Allright! Just remember the safety rules, be careful, it is dangerous |

out there, use both brakes, front and rear at the same time (don't go all front brake downhill), and join the bicycle forums, here, under groups, and also Bicycle Forum. Then get out there and start getting some miles. Last summer I was up to 25 miles a day, not every day, but 2 x per week. dc

Do you usually ride on roads, paved trails, or dirt?

16. That's not a bad way to start |

Just remember that bike trails are full of hazards too. One of the worst is people who have those 50' retractable dog leashes. Those who use them on multi-use trails should be beat to death in front of their kids, as Carlin used to say. Other hazards are people who let their kids use them as playgrounds, joggers who wander all over the trail with an ipod stuck to their head oblivious to their surroundings, and especially road crossings, just to name a few.
Invest in a good and comfortable helmet if you haven't already done so and wear it religiously. If you ride often, you will probably get tired of the same trail. Consider getting a good bike rack if you are uncomfortable riding on public streets so you can expand your scenery and keep things interesting. It is loads of fun and a great way to get in shape.

17. Good things to know Thanks |

I didn't see anyone on the trail yesterday, but I did see a huge blood splatter, like maybe sosmeone took a dive with their nose or something.

And don't be surprised if you start looking for opportunities/reasons to go for a spin after a very short time. Get a good helmet, wear it every time. Do a little practicing; I know that the new-fangled bikes were a lot different from the two-wheelers I rode in my youth.

5. Did you get a pretty helmet to go with it? |
|
Perhaps more important, did you buy a good lock? Asked by someone who had a bike stolen.

8. Lock. Yes. Do not leave bike for 1 minute without lock, and lock |
|
it to something like a sign post, some solid thing that won't move. Put the lock thru the front tire and the frame. dc

12. Remember, rules are different for bicycles |
|
Helmets are for wusses. They look silly, and will mess up your hair.
Stop signs and red lights are only for motorized vehicles. Ignore them.
Ride on street or sidewalk, your choice. Lawns too.
In the street, you own the whole lane. It's fun to weave back and forth.
Jam some ipod earbuds in your ears, and you won't have to listen to the sound of screeching tires.
You can steer without your hands on the bars, freeing them up for texting.
Have fun!
