Yeah, well, my Dad could use some more Lounge vibes, please?
Week 3 in the hospital. He has bleeding (from the Coumidin & his blood being too thin). I feel helpless to do anything but pray and hope. One of my other sisters is there now (not the one who is a nurse, but another one). My sister just told me she's been there 2.5 hours and hasn't been allowed to see him yet.

I'm trying not to freak out. :-(

12. I thought docs had to be careful with Coumadin and older patients - i know
that is what the doctors told us when my father had some stroke issues.

I hope it works out for you all and that he improves soon.

19. There are apparently two different schools of thought...
regarding Coumadin use following bypass surgery.

I hope the doctor knows what he is doing.

17. Hi Capn Sunshine... I realize what you're saying, but there is a back story
After triple bypass surgery, it is routine to give a patient coumadin. The problem my Dad is having is that he has a very small window between too much and too little coumadin. He and his surgeon had a very long talk about it yesterday morning (and my older sister realizes what's going on). It gets down to "the lesser of two evils" in this case. He can't afford a blood clot. But, on the other hand, this bleeding has gone on too long. I am worried. And I do understand, more and more, why they call it "practicing medicine." :-(

You won't believe this one. My step-monster told one of my sisters she doesn't want my Dad to go home because she is "afraid he will bleed all over the house." Just when I thought she could never stoop to a lower level. :grr:

36. ** Update **
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 09:21 AM by Haole Girl
Well, the right sister went out to FL this time. That's for certain. My younger sis got into it with the doctor after he refused to lower the Coumadin level. She stayed with my dad all night & knew what was going on. She said, "Can we talk person-to-person here?". When the doc finally got off his high horse, my sister explained to him that my father didn't just have a little bleeding... he bled all night... in fact, there were two bio hazard bags full of discarded dressings...and... well, the rest is TMI.

The doctor finally agreed to take my dad off Coumadin long enough to slow the bleeding and then put him on a lower dosage.

Now I have to hope and pray my father doesn't have a stroke. The doctor seemed very convinced he could stroke out if taken off the Coumadin. It's so confusing, to me, why moderation would not be the answer. My dad already had 4 transfusions of blood. The whole thing is crazy.

I was hoping this would be winding down by now, too. I'm just glad I have 3 sisters.... apparently it takes that many relatives to be an advocate for a hospital patient!
