Anyone here get the $4 prescriptions at Wal-Mart? Is there
Edited on Wed Jun-09-10 08:25 PM by GreenPartyVoter
something special I have to do like enroll in a program to get those? Because today my husband tried getting a script filled there and came back with 16 pills that cost a little more than a dollar each. If he had filled the whole thing for 200 we would have been sunk. So what gives? :(

1. I get $4 meds at Target
they have a list & if your prescription or the generic is on it, it's $4. Don't have to do or sign anything to get it.

10. I switched from Target after I figured I was getting screwed without being kissed.
I have 2 hypertension meds that they wanted to charge me $20 some for 3 months claiming on their list they were not covered under the discount price. I am on Wisconsin's BadgerCare Plus healthcare program for income eligible adults without children. I switched my prescriptions over to our ShopKo stores and they are right on top of things.

Now, $4 for 3 months. So $32 a year will pay for my meds. At Target I would have been paying over $160 a year for the same drugs.

11. That's weird, maybe someone didn't know what they were doing

 Glad you found a better deal! :)

All I can say is that my local Target has a great pharmacist who is almost anal about checking things on the list & has trained all the pharmacy people to do the same. You can always tell when you get a new person because they don't do things "her" way. ;) It's funny to see customers tell the new hires "Um, that's not how M does it" so I guess she's got us trained too. ;)

On edit after reading: Didn't realize I'd struck pharmacy gold. Wow. If my doctor doesn't write the script the "right" way, they call & ask. Unless it's one of the drugs that they need to see the handwritten script before dispensing, they'll give it to you right there after talking to the doc & getting them to fax the corrected version over.

12. Could be. There were young girls working there.
At ShopKo there was an older lady who seemed to know her stuff. BadgerCare Plus has 2 prescription plans and at Shopko they used them in conjunction to get the $4 price. Although even at Target one of the pharmacists tried to tell me that one of my prescriptions was not available in generic and at ShopKo she told me they were the first time I went.

Anyways, ShopKo is less than a mile from my home and the reason I first went to Target is because it was close to my clinic.

13. Sounds like it then--the human factor
if the head pharmacist focuses on creating as little problems & least cost for the customers as possible, you'll get treated like you did at ShopKo. :)

2. I boycott Walmart but certainly understand that some folks have
to go there based on their financial situation. However, I have been able to get really good prices at Target and Costco.

5. I believe kroger related stores are doing the $4 program as well
There are a number of the larger chains who have instituted similar programs, I believe

3. It's only $4 for particular meds, like generics.

4. They probably have a list online
I know Fred Meyers does. And its important to make sure the Dr writes EXACTLY the right prescription to match the $4 list options. The drug, the brand, the dose, every damn detail, or forget $4, you pay out the ass.

They pulled that on me for a asthma inhaler. the prescription didn't specify the exact right details for a regular ol asthma inhaler, so they refused to do the generic version. Luckily for me, I had had to get the script from an emergency clinic with volunteer Dr's, so I had no way to get it reissued by a Dr who might not be back for months. And even if she had been around again soon, It would have been a royal pain, as she was mainly interested in lecturing me about unrelated issues that I had no power to solve at that time. It becomes hard to "excercise regularly" when one cannot breathe regularly for significant stretches of time. So I left the inhaler I couldn't afford, and just learned to live without breathing easily, using the plethora of expired leftovers from back when I still had insurance for those real emergency situations. Its a glorious system they got for us.

6. Like Lil Missy said...
.
...it's mostly generics -- and then sometimes only certain dosages.
.
.
At one point, I was on 9 different meds (down to 6 now, though not
a single fucking one of them is recreational)... and I think 6, maybe 7
of them were on the $4 list at the grocery pharmacy where I get my
meds (I've moved, but Tariq, the pharmacist there, REALLY looks out
for me -- even catching a highly questionable combination of meds
once, so I go the extra distance to get back there -- not always the
EASIEST thing to do when you bus it).
.
If you can afford three months supply at a time, I think it's only
$10 where I go (Fry's Supermarkets).

7. The $4.00 prescriptions are only for certain, specific generic medications.
They are medicines that Wal-Mart is able to acquire cheaply from their suppliers.

Not all generics are covered, however. Before you get a script filled, ask if it is on their list. Wal-Mart usually has the list of covered meds available online.

If your husband's script is for a name brand med, check with the doctor to see if there are any coupon cards available. You could also check the product website.

Good luck.

8. IIRC, their list is online.
My DH had his meds changed to generic and his dosage changed so instead of one 50mg pill which they didn't cover, he can take 2-25mg pills which is covered. It's weird how they operate...because they would also cover the 50mg pills if he took 2 a day but since he only needs 1 a day they couldn't. It made no sense to me but that's what he was told.

If the meds are something that is only available in name brand or if your dh is required to take only that and not a generic, you might check at this website to see if there's assistance available.

right script! :)
