Holy crap I'm nervous
In about an hour I'm going to leave the security of my company driver position by calling my boss and giving him my 2 weeks notice. Then I will start the process of being a business man again as well as a trucker and will start looking for a truck to buy. I've got a few in mind, but I haven't talked to any sales people yet.

I bet some of you who have been following my threads about this are thinking that I'm crazy. Well, it just so happens that my CB handle is Madman. :)

But, yeah, I still have a house payment and a car payment. My health care and tax bills will go up and I'll have a tractor-trailer payment as well as all of the associated bills that go with that. So I do have something to lose if I fail. Did I mention I was nervous?

1. I wish you the best of luck Tobin

But I know you are making the right decision for yourself and I admire your courage.

Will you try to buy that nice blue truck?

2. I will if I can manage the logistics, if not there are a couple of similar trucks
that are closer to home. The one you are talking about is in Grand Rapids, Michigan- I think about 300 miles from here. It's a really good deal, but I'll only have a week of free time between jobs so I will have to make sure I can pull that off. I can't go up there now. The only time I could do it is on a Sunday and they are closed then.

But I will get something nice even if it's not exactly the deal I'm looking for.

6. He took it well seeing as how I'm giving two weeks notice
Edited on Mon Jun-14-10 08:42 AM by Tobin S.
Said since I was leaving in good standing the door would be open if I wanted to come back and there was a need for a driver. I told a couple of drivers about my plans last Friday so he may have heard about it before now, but he said he didn't know I was thinking about leaving.

5. You can do it.
I have been reading your posts and commend you for making such a major life-change.....many people don't have the courage to do so due to fear of failure. I do not think you are crazy in the least....you really seem like you know what you want to do in life at this point and with the attitude you have, I feel assured it will be a successful change for you. Not that it will be necessarily easy but, is anything worthwhile ever easy?

Best of luck to you. When I was a child, it was my dream to be a long distance trucker (not a common goal for a little girl)....I just thought then it would be too cool to hit the open roads with my cat as a partner.

8. Lots of drivers have a cat or a dog :)
Dogs are more common, though. Although there are more women in trucking now days, some male drivers still give them a hard time. Things are changing, but it's going to take a while before those good ol' boy attitudes give way.

13. That 'good ol' boy mentality'
effects a lot of jobs that for years have been considered 'a man's job'. As an industrial mechanic (1 female out of over 200 men on one job), I learned real quick about how tough it is for women in some jobs. A woman has to work twice as hard, do twice as much, be twice as good....to get half the respect that a man in the same position gets. I will say that through the years, I did see some change in this but, I live in the South and, well, Southerners tend to hold onto their stupidity longer than most. :hi:

please rethink this. There is a reason you are nervous. Listen to your gut.

16. The reason I'm nervous is that I just quit my job and I'm about to go out and spend 50k!
It's hard to be confident in those circumstances. :)

I've done my research and I've run the numbers. I should see a big raise if everthing works out alright, and I think it will. The only thing I'm worried about as far as who I'm leasing to goes is if they are telling the truth. Sometimes trucking recruiiters lie. Ain't nothing I can do about that, though.

15. Enjoy!
I gave up a secure job in 2002 to do something more fulfilling. I felt like I was jumping off a cliff blindfolded at the time.

I definitely had a few of those "what have I done" panicky moments along the way, but I have NEVER regretted it. It's great that you still have the safety net too of leaving that job on good terms without burning bridges.

24. Haha! Thanks for the tuneage.
I just got back from test driving a truck. Needed a little work but I think I can negotiate that in with the price. 2007 International 9400i. Damn thing about rattled me apart in low idle. I don't know if that's common for Internationals or not. It has an ISX Cummins. In sounded alright once you bumped the idle up and also out on the road.

25. Binders ride like they are, well...built by a company that builds harvesting equipment.
My 9400 is an Eagle, but only has a 208" wheelbase, 51" bunk, due to weight considerations.

Rides like an unsprung haywagon.

Still partial to 'em, though.

I think I saw those blue Binders in the Truck Paper, if they are the ones I think, looked like they were in nice shape...I think some even had APU's.

Best of luck, Driver.
