16. I'm curious, what do those standards encompass?
I like hot dogs but don't buy them because of the parts they are made of. Does Kosher give us real meat or just Rabbi blessed parts and pieces?

Why can't someone make a hot dog from cuts of meat, not those parts that are normally destined for the rubbish. No lips and other parts for me.

I used to buy Oscar Meyer because they advertised that they used real cuts of beef. Someone told me that was baloney...that is another story.

25. Real meat
Kosher standards also encompass humane animal treatment (supposedly).
But here is what the company has to say about their kosher standards..

No fillers either (lips, tongue, etc.). How the animal is killed must be humane: single, non-painful cut.

Drag it through the garden! NO ketchup, please.

Vienna Beef hot dogs are difficult to come by in the South--except for when Aldi has a "special buy." Hebrew Nationals make a fine substitute. Even the "fat free" ones are good.

33. Hebrew National and Thumann's
For the Hebrew Nationals, either the quarter pounders (Costco, naturally) or the 3-oz dogs when they're on sale locally.

For the Thumanns, I forget the variety, but it's the bulk package (Costco naturally) in the blue and white packaging. You can also find smaller packages at many grocery stores here in the northeast and mid-Atlantic areas.

37. These days,
I find most hot dogs inedible, even formerly good specialty brands, and even when buried in condiments.

There is one widely-available brand that I find passable (and that still "plumps" nicely), but the beef version is like $2.50/pound on sale, so I can't recommend it. (I buy the "meat" version on sale for $.99 sometimes, but it's only barely-passable even in small quantities.)

As opposed to hot dogs I buy pork sausage from Henry's (naw) when it's on sale (usually for $3.00/pound, but I've bought it at $2.00). (I find most brands of sausage unpalatable these days, with bone chips, gristle, and unidentifiable lumps of crap being all-too-common*, in addition to being tasteless or badly spiced to cloak this; so I quit buying them entirely. If you don't use the power of your dollars (and votes) wisely, there'll be no limits to the depredations of corporations.)

*: When they moved, I got the leftovers from my buddies' freezer (and it). They'd bought some sausage at $3.99 for a half-pound: bone chips in every bite (I didn't take many, but I sampled most pieces... I hated throwing it out).

...

Lest I convey the wrong impression, on my last shopping trip I bought roughly 8 pounds of meat (most of which will be frozen and rationed out over months), and roughly 50 pounds of fruit and vegetables (most of which will be long gone in a month). I also bought 6 pounds of bread and 2 pounds of cheese; and I have perhaps 4 pounds of beef and 10 pounds of corn tortillas (which freeze well) frozen. In all cases, I wrap individual servings (dry servings, very important) in (inexpensive) printer-paper and store them in large plastic bags, which "live" in the freezer. (The corn tortillas' own bag works fine for this purpose, and they seem to stay good for a long time. Moreover, they're cheap, versatile (burritos, tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, chips, "croutons") and filling (enchilada sauce will substitute for salsa or taco sauce in a pinch) -- and maybe full of geney, GMO goodness.)

On a related note, let's be clear -- the poor (and otherwise disadvantaged) often have fewer choices than their better off, more affluent "counterparts" (but which doesn't always keep these "counterparts" from looking down their noses at the poor, ill, etc). Necessity is a grim master.

54. i chose other
for me i'm way more particular about the way i eat the hot dog as opposed to what brand they are. first, no veggie/soy substitutes. substitute soy product vs. mystery meat paste is really not a good choice either way. they must be either cooked over a fire or a charcoal grill to get rid of the yucky boiled meat paste flavor. they must be served on a white hot dog bun, no other bread substitute. to enhance the flavor they must be smothered in mustard, ketchup and sweet pickle relish. but no processed cheese food product necessary.

i would only eat a hot dog in the first place if there was no other menu choices. and if it's packed in a natural casing, i won't touch it period.
