Tennis History - Right Now
Not just tennis history...but sports history.

Right now Isner (US) and Mahut (FR) are in the fifth set....The game score is:

49 to 49

A typical set is around 10 games.

This is the longest set in tennis history, the longest match in tennis history and the most aces....

And there is no end in sight.

If you know anything about tennis...this is unbelievable.

13. When they started talking about Mahut's 12-pack
(or was it Isner's), I knew they were losing it.

If that woman announcer says ONE MORE TIME, that this match has "well surpassed" every other match in history, I am going to throw something at the TV...who is that anyway?

Recognized Brad Gilbert...and I would have known Pam Shriver's voice or Carillo's...

I thought if she said the word "epic" one more time, I was going to have to go get something to drink and make a drinking game out of it:rofl:

Wonder who will win?

This is so far beyond the old records that it nearly defies belief. I've never seen anything like it in sport. Not sure that there are words to fully describe the event.

23. I followed this for a while today, and I noticed neither player was able to break serve.
I think that's because they were exhausted. That's part of the reason neither player was able to win; you have to break serve to pull up by two games! In the morning, I expect one player or the other will end it quickly. Isner in particular was serving relatively slow shots; this is a strong indicator of exhaustion. Mahut served fast serves (over 120 mph) longer. So I think fatigue was a worse problem for Isner than Mahut, and Isner is ranked much higher. So expect Isner to end it tomorrow in short order.

Absolutely amazing set, and let's not forget the guys were tired when they started it!

41. When I Think About It...
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 11:07 AM by Steely_Dan
I think Mahut was the better player. It was Isner's serve that kept him in the match. (Not that John isn't an excellent player). I just think it's amazing that every time Mahut went to serve....HE HAD TO HOLD SERVE. Amazing ability to focus.

Their names will forever be linked together.

I would like to have seen Isner be more comforting to Mahut. But he is young.

I am happy that I had a chance to watch this historic match.

42. The post-match ceremony was a bad idea
Mahut just wanted to get the fuck out of there. He didn't need to stand in front of the cameras and hear about the match he just lost. It sucks. Good of him to hold it together.
