8. It's been oppressive, blazing hot and humid, here in NY for the past week...
Yesterday I couldn't touch the steering wheel in my car when I started out, burned my hands. Thank heavens for AC, and fans. The local news said it's going to break on Sunday, but for how long, they haven't said... x(

16. This pic makes me sad!
I get uncomfortable above 93°F but looking at the SF alternative I'll keep my complaints about 100°(+) temps to a minimum. Summer is supposed to be Hot! Cool nights would be ideal but I guess you can't have everything until late August.

14. Here in Indiana....
...it's been unbearable for most of the week. Highs in the low 90s with heat index in high 90s. It rained yesterday, though, so now it's **cooler** with high humidity. So it's still unbearable.

A very pleasant 22deg here in the south-west of the UK (sorry that's Celsius....that'll be, erm.....((22*9)/5)+32 = 71.6 on the Fahrenheit scale!)

19. Can do.....
The south-east is the hottest in the summer (London, Kent....)
They've broken a few records there in the past couple of summers, and the Met Office have issued a heatwave alert for this weekend......

Current watch level: Level 2 - Alert and Readiness in one or more regions of England and Wales

Issued at: Friday 9 July 2010 at 09:59

The probability of heatwave conditions in parts of England and Wales between 1200 on Friday and 1000 on Monday is 70%

Very warm weather is expected across southeastern parts of England over the next few days, with daytime temperatures in excess of 30C in places and night minima in the high teens. Minima in central London may not fall below 20C. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected to move across from the west later in the weekend and the beginning of next week.

22. Interesting how Atlantic Gulf currents so much influence
UK weather. How else can one explain such moderate winter temps in a 50 to 55+ Latitude? And (apparently) not alot of fluctuation between seasons.

Here in the US, I live near the 45th yet we are subject to bitter winters and occasionally (like now) oppressive heat... Not like other US folks south of me by any means, but still very unpleasant. As an amateur observer, I'm curious as to how the role the Atlantic Gulf movements affect the UK as well as continental W. European weather. Intersting stuff IMO. Especially if you think hypothetically about what would happen if this were to shift somehow.

Thanks for joining us and adding your observations arenean. You seem 'cool' in more ways then one... Yeah, I know; I'm a bit of a geek socially. :eyes:... but I mean well ;-)

23. No weather extremes here (usually!)
Hi CC,

Yes, NW europe's temperatures are moderated by the Atlantic - we don't get continental weather patterns of hot summer and cold winter temps. Most of our weather comes from the west (maritime air masses from the Atlantic), so the air temps reflect the sea temperatures, especially in the winter, where the west coast stays at around 10-12C.

The main reason why we had a lot of snow the winter just gone, and a couple of weeks of hot temperatures now, is that we've had a lot of blocking weather systems since about November, preventing the usual Atlantic low pressure systems from coming over. When we do get heatwaves in the summer, it's due to the buildup of the Azores High, which force the depressions north of us (usually Iceland get them instead!)

You can tell I work in Meteorology can't you - and I'm totally baffled by Fahrenheit!

Thanks for the welcome!

24. Winters of 10 to 12 C? Wow!
I am just as baffled by Celsius as you Fahrenheit (me, most certainly more) But based on my cheap plastic thermometer, that would be winters of approx.the equivalent of 50-54 degrees F!?!... You're not cool anymore in my book... this is just WAY too unfair! You suck! :P...Just kidding...LOL

I've always known that the UK has milder winter temps but didn't know to what extent as in comparison to us in the USA... And I never realized how much so. Wow! Kent is in Southern England so how much variation is there in the northern areas and other parts of the UK? ... especially N.Scotland/N.Ireland?

I've seen some winter nights here in Maine USA get as low as -25 F, not counting wind chill! (approx. -35 or more C???) My thermometer goes no lower on the Celsius scale, so it's hard to say the equivalent with certainty.

Though I'm mentioning extremes here, average winter temp's in my area of the US is +10 F (or -12 C?). Average summers... 71 F (approx. 22 C?) because we are talking averages however, there is little account taken for the crazy fluctuations we see here, and that may be true of you folks though I suspect not as much (as you too have observed).

As far as the Azores High you speak of, I admittedly knew little about it  therefore had to check it out. And yeah I lazily picked Wikipedia... (not always the best for accuracy- or so I am told) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azores_High

Nonetheless, I learned some new stuff today.. who knew that Iceland could get heatwaves  strange weather patterns or no it still seems odd!

As a meteorologist, have you been following trending patterns and are you seeing the effects of global warming in them? Whether it be here in the US or there in the UK or anywhere else in the world, would you not agree that we are seeing some really awful man-made climate changes? I know the info probably doesn't follow some perfect linear pattern but still...

Sorry to inundate you with such 'stuff'. One can get info on the net but it is not as easy to find personal observations and opinions from different regions of the world... particularly informed ones! :-)

25. C or F
Hi CC,

I'm sorry to say that I can't stand Fahrenheit!

I know the US still uses it (and Liberia, Palau and Burma) but every single other country uses Celsius!

The weather on this planet is dependent on the water cycle, which is what the Celsius scale is based on: 0degC (=freezing point of water) and 100degC (=boiling point of water). The equivalent in (shudder) Fahrenheit is 32F and 212F. 0F is based on a curious freezing point of water and salt and Fahrenheit's other reference point was the temperature of his wife's armpit!

Yes, I worked in climate change (Hadley Centre) from 1990 to 1994, and now I work in surface observations, and I can tell you that all the results are 'toned down' for political deliberations and agreements. The extent of climate change is reported *very* conservatively, in order to get everyone on board (although that still didn't work in Copenhagen).....
