2. One of my neighbors had his mower cranked up at 7:00 a.m.
and on a Saturday at that! :grr:

It's a shame, because otherwise, he's a nice man.

3. The later you wait to cut the yard
The hotter it gets. With this heat, people want to avoid heat exhaustion or heatstroke. I don't blame people a bit. That is one of the things you have to live with in the suburbs. My suggestion is buy earplugs, they work wonders.

6. First of all, I work the late shift
Second, I don't see why the community property has to be cut (including the weed-eater right up against our fence) every single day. This week alone-- 3 days in a row. :(

8. I guess I'll go back to a day shift
Which will mean working weekends. But I can't run on only 6 hrs of sleep too many days in a row. I envy people who can.

12. That's bullshit
Once a week should do it. You should check and se if your city has a noise ordinance. Some city's won't let you use power equipment until 9.

17. Apparently, I am the only one in our neighborhood
who works 2nd shift. My neighbos think 8am is late. I wish they would wait until 9am...or at the very least limit the yardwork to 2 days per week!

5. Down the street from my parent's house
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 09:34 AM by NewJeffCT
we had one guy who hated his next-door neighbor, so would get up at 6am and start cutting his grass - just to piss them off. That guy has moved out, but the neighbor is still there. Archie & Edith Bunker from "All in the Family" could have been based on the lawnmower guy & his wife.

9. Lawnmowers are our version of vuvuzelas
constant buzzing sound.

:hi:

You just need to get up earlier, and let that Harley warm up for 15 minutes. Your contribution to the vuvuzelousness of it all.

11. I worked a swing shift
for years, alternating between 12 hour days and 12 hour nights. You just need to invest in a good set of foam rubber type earplugs like they use in industrial settings - most pharmacies have them. They are not uncomfortable at all and will make a world of difference. :hi:

13. Earplugs are definitely the solution...
I've worked the night shift for 9 years now. Couldn't survive without earplugs.

As zabet stated, get the foam kind, not the wax or plastic kind. The foam ones you can wear a few days, or a week, then toss them and use a fresh pair. I have found ones shaped like bullets are the best.

Like these http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Ear-Care/Foam-Ear-Plugs/ID=prod3178289-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku3177122

But be warned all earplugs are NOT the same size even though they might be shaped the same.

These Flents Quite Time are smaller than the first model. http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Time-Comfort-Foam-Plugs/dp/B001FPCUHA

Something else you will want to buy is a pair of long (6" or longer) tweezers. These make taking the plugs out a lot easier.

Something like these http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=long+tweezers&hl=en&cid=3217716022318467178&ei=sUM3TJv6CIbIyQXP98CdCA&sa=title&ved=0CBEQ8wIwAjgA#p

20. A few extra tips.....
Understand it will take you a while to get used to them, a week or longer. Experiment with their use.

With CLEAN hands roll them into a tight cylinder and quickly insert them. Reaching over you head with one hand and pulling gently upward on your ear helps straighten your ear canal and help with insertion. If they are too shallow they will not work properly, too deep or else they will hurt. You will find a level of comfort that is acceptable to you.

You may have to buy several brands before settling on just the right ones for you. Once you have the right ones, stick with that model. Walgreens and CVS both carry several models. You can also try a sporting goods store, check the department that sells guns or ammo.

The first few times you take them out, you make go EWWWW from the earwax on them. This is normal. Scrape it off, or toss the plugs and use a fresh pair.

Be careful if you have a pet or small children, they could eat them and cause problems.

Make sure you have a LOUD alarm clock. This Radio Shack model is a good one. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2553259&filterName=Brand&filterValue=RadioShack

And eyemask / eyeshade can also be a big help for daysleepers. As can blackout curtains or shades.

15. Mowing lawns has little to do with cutting grass...
it's a ritual every bit as implanted as tailgate parties are to to other segments of the male population.

The grass is not cut because of any particular length or appearance it may have, but when the grasscutter is moved to demonstrate his homeowner's abilities in ways that don't involve full trash bags, hammers, or paint.

19. safer at 6 AM (many heat index advisories)
once you've had heat stroke even if you survive you're heat sensitive for life

for the sake of the worker or home owner, in this summer's weather, i hope most of the lawn mowers are starting at 6 AM and finished by 8 AM...

i can wear earplugs or have an AC indoors to provide white noise if my sleep-in is disturbed but...once the worker has heat stroke he's prob. impaired for life...

pretty sure they have heavy equipment that operates on the street in big cities and out in the countryside as well so i'm not sure why suburbia should be singled out for anyone's ire

banned Gas Powered Leaf Blowers in the city. I was all for it,

26. I'd be in favor of that, too!
The family across the street has a gardener who uses a gas-powered leaf blower. Loud revving over, and over, and over again to blow little clusters of leaves into a little pile, moving the little pile all the way down the sidewalk.
Not only is it an irritating noise, but it seems like such a waste of time and gas. I prefer good old-fashioned rakes, and leaving leaves under bushes for mulch!

25. Yeah? How about the Cholo who lives across the street with the El Camino?
The thing has a fucking aircraft engine in it or something. Starts it up at 7:30. Waddles back in the house. Lets it run for 10 to 15 minutes before waddling back out and leaving.

I'd LOVE the sound of a lawn mower at 8 AM over the sound of THIS jerk at 7:30.

28. Is your neighbor suffering from dementia?
Mowing or using a weed whacker everyday has to be a sign of mental imbalance, or maybe hatred for all other human beings.

You might assist them with the problem of grass and weeds you know like existing, but I'm not advocating anything.
