Ever had a nice big chilled Florida mango?
It's mango season here and I just got my first batch. They are so good! Nothing at all like the imports. If I could, I'd send each and every one of you a case of these wonderful specimens.

If you live in Florida, or have plans to visit, please get a knowledgeable person to turn you on to a perfectly ripened one. There are several types and they all have slightly different flavors. But they'll knock you down with that sweet wonderful taste. They are a great energy food and they go very well with other sweet fruits, like bananas or persimmons and such.

Truly a nectar of the gods.

Cheers!

1. I just bought some at the grocery store today.
I ate my first mangoes and guavas in Kenya, and they were awesome. I don't know where the mangoes I bought today are from, probably FL. 3 for $2.

2. Cool, that price sounds just about right.
There's a real narrow window for prime ripening. It can literally be hours. Then, once you get them in the fridge, they stay good for many many days. I've had them stay good for several weeks. They can also be frozen, but you should peel them first. Then they'll be good for months.

Most people jump the gun and eat them a bit too soon. You have to be patient. They can be fickle too. They can go bad quick if you let your guard down.

Glad you got some!

I can't think of hurricane season without thinking of my mangos.

It's like Christmas for me!

3. I had no idea there were mainland mangoes
in Hawai'i, they are so common that people have trees in their yards, usually festooned with "No Picking from Sidewalk" signs! Their season is in June.

4. Yes, they can grow as far north as Merritt Island, where two rivers are close together.
Separated by a thin strip of land. That buffers them from the cold in winter. And they do very well in the Miami area and across to Naples, then down to the Keys.

I hope you get to try one someday. They are so good. They leave a real impression on first-timers.

Cheers.
