Lounge kitteh lovers...need specific tip:
My roomie has a 10 week old kitten, who whines/cries for food. Since I'm usually the first up, I end up feeding him, and he cries at my door (also most of the time the REASON I am first up). He also cries when hungry and in the kitchen where he's fed. Is there a way to try to stop this behavior now? Thanks in advance for the advice!

The first time kitteh owners,

Syd and her roomies

1. Kittens can eat unlimited amounts of food
They are very hungry because they're growing. It's OK to keep their bowl full.

2. Fill up that bowl with a good brand of kitten food.
That kitten is growing and needs to eat a bunch. They need the higher fat and protein that is in kitten food, and I honestly think that the better the food you feed that kitten, the better that cat's health will be all his/her life.

Vets a lot of times push Science Diet--and it is decent quality food--however, don't let yourself be convinced that it is the ONLY good food for your pet.

Enjoy that new kitten! That energy is amazing to watch and just a bundle of fun.

4. just keep a bowl of dry food available all the time...
...but if you ritualize feeding, like always giving a treat in the morning, you can pretty much expect your cat to be eager and wake you up. Those morning snuggles are part of what makes living with cats so great! Nevermind that while you're thinking about love between the species, kitty is thinking "when is this oaf gonna get off their lazy ass and feed me, goddammit?!"

5. I agree...always leave dry food out...cats are grazers and
when you only feed him at certain times, he gets very hungry. Oh, and post photos!!!!

6. And you should also check for worms. Sometimes they eat way too
much due to worms. If so, you need to take him in for worm medicine (a shot).

7. I have a 10 week old kitten too

she acts like she is going to starve before I get her canned food ready. It helps to have some dry food in a bowl all the time, she lets me sleep in once she found out she could get her chow in another area.

I agree with getting the kitten dewormed. It was automatically done by the vet when we took her in, he said he always get some dewormer in the kittens because its not unusal for them to have worms. We have had her for 6 weeks, she was a rescue 4 week old, who amazingly could already drink her formula from a bowl.

8. I absolutely will not feed the cats when I first get up. So they don't
associate me crawling out of bed and them getting food. As a result, my cats do not wake me up all the time. But I also make sure there is enough food in the bowl so that I know they are not hungry.

9. kittens need a lot of food
are you feeding enough?
and it needs to be often.

i agree with a few others to make sure to get good quality.

read the label to make sure you are feeding the correct amount.

a 10 week old is tiny and will be VERY hungry.
And also might be in shock from losing mom and the litter mates if he was just taken.

10. Thanks to all for the responses
Kitteh "Jah" is getting good food. My roomie bought it from a local organic animal feed vendor. He gets all he can eat at feedings, and then leftovers till he finishes, and cries for more again, so I think a combination of more regular refills of the bowl combined with the not feeding immediately when I get up is a good tactic. Thanks again!

Syd

This cat is crazy. Black and white with crazy long whiskers (since 8 weeks!), and little white long hairs on his back past the jet black fur.
