24. My apartment neighbor and handyman cleaned my carpets last week.
I asked him before hand if I should vacuum, and he said no. So, I went out until he was done. I came back to him complaining to me about all the cat hair clogging his hot-water cleaning vacuum. I reminded him that I offered to vacuum first and that shut him up ;)

26. I scored a 1958 Zenith Transoceanic SW a couple of months back
Granted, it's transistor, and not tube, but it is in immaculate shape. Best $2 I have ever spent. Having a lot of fun with it; had been a long time since I listened to shortwave broadcasts.

16. This of course is exactly why AWACs only use miniature valves instead of solid-state componentry.

21. Ah, the sweet blue glow of winged C 6L6s.
I think Svetlanas and Tung Sols are the only power tubes that do that when they're not fucked up. Pretty.

8. Remember the machine they used to have in drug stores and hardware
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 04:32 PM by Old Troop
stores that you used to test your vacuum tubes? To a 10 year old kid in the early sixties it looked like Buck Rogers stuff.

9. Saw many of those
But in Brazil they were all at specialized electronics shops. The ones I would eagerly run into with schematics, parts lists, and allowance.

(Tube testers in drugstores?)

18. I still ran into tube testers in drugstores until about 1985 or so...
unfortunately, local specialized electronics shops are almost extinct now. When I was growing up, there were a half dozen in town (and that's not counting the Rat Shacks)

Respectively, Rua República do Líbano and Rua Santa Ifigênia.

I wasn't sorry to see them go. However, I do wish I had kept one of the really big ones and made a lamp out of it.

I have a longtime addiction to that smell put off by heated tubes. The memories.
It's like Proust or something.

28. '70 Fender Quad Reverb
Once owned by Hound Dog Taylor. Amp voted best backline/open mic amp and amp least likely to be stolen because it is too gotdang heavy and bulky to move by your average crack head.

30. I have tubes in something like this
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 11:07 AM by cyberswede
1938 Philco radio - works great. AM and Short Wave - the dial displays SW stations from Berlin, London, etc. I bought it at a tag sale, and when I got it home, I found the delivery slip inside - it was delivered in 1938 to the house where I bought it - I'm only the second owner. :)

31. I think I soiled my pants.
:wow:

Two questions:
1) How much did you pay?
2) What do you get on SW? IS there any match to the old stations on the dial?

33. Other: I'm planning to buy something with vacuum tubes.
I have my sights set on a Mesa/Boogie Single Rectifier.... :headbang:

Since we're on the subject:
In the Futurama episode "Love and Rocket" Bender directly connects himself with the Planet Express Ship's AI (who he was dating), and after he is digitized into a virtual world he sees vacuum tubes in the background and says "Tubes? You're older than you said you were!"
On the commentary track, they talk about the kid who drew the background, who, after reading 'tubes' in the description, drew a bunch of pipes. They then had to explain what tubes were, because he was too young to know...
