Why are Furries hated?
Because i'm a furry and i'm constantly given crap about being a furry and i don't undestand why people have to hate on me for being a furry.

For those who don't know what a furry is these describe it.

8. Heck, I'm a furry!
I love the good pin-up art, mostly.

Here's my "persona/fursona/feathersona," an archaeopteryx.

At AnthroCon this year a guy showed up in a archaeopteryx suit.

It's just fun, and a little diversion from reality.
Like Trekkies, Whovians, Star Wars fans, anime fans, etc.

"Furry" characters with sex appeal show up in a lot of places too.

Minerva Mink, Krystal in Starfox, Lola Bunny in Space jam, etc.

19. There are "scaleys" as well.
Those who enjoy reptile "furrys" also.

The biggest name in "scaleys" nowadays is "Cynder," from the "Legend Of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon" videogame.

But other "scaleys" have appeared, most notably Elizabeth Borris' character in her comic strip, "Broken Plot Device," named "Lizardbeth."

and reduce it immediately to a purely sexual fetish. I'm sorry for this. I'm a Trekkie. Granted, I never worn an uniform or Klingon masks, and never will, but I can't remember that the people who do at Cons get the hatred for it. They're called 'fans,' while you, obviously, even in this thread, are called a 'perv' and am mocked. I'm sorry.

37. The idea of turning an animal into a sexual being for human pleasure is creepy.
CMW said above that some may correlate to homosexuality and I contend the correlation is with bestiality.

Putting boobs on a cat is weird no matter how you slice it. The thought of you looking at my cat and getting a boner is downright fucked up.

So, don't call me daddy in bed. Don't show me porn of a woman pretending to be a girl. Let's not role play student/teacher. And let's not dress up in costumes of imaginary creatures to turn each other on.

Any and all affiliations of children with sex/sensuality is chilling to me to say the least.

75. One major point lacking in this dicussion is the spiritual connection,
sometimes also referred to through the label of 'otherkin'. Most people only know of the sexual connection and disregard anything else. The media tells them what to think by going for that emotional jugular, making the concept seem "creepy" because only sexual connotations are presented.

For some, it goes deeper than the physical. (Yeah, I expect people here to take that sexually, especially in the Lounge ;)) I also don't expect most DU-members to take a spiritual connection seriously, either. But I do see it as a spiritual connection in a way that is difficult to put into words. You either know it or you don't, and what is unknown or unknowable is open to ridicule, by the unknowing ;)

76. From my experience on Something Awful
which bans (or at least it used to) furries, I think one of the main points was the reaction.

Now, I have nothing against furries, personally. I think it's creepy and weird, but it's your bag, that's cool. Most people have some odd fetish (or lifestyle, to remove the sexual aspect). No hate.

I think what happened SA, at least, is that some of the furries there cried loudest when poked with a stick. Everyone on wide-open message boards like SA gets ridiculed at some point, and most people laugh or joke it off, or leave. A lot of furries started claiming persecution, etc, when all that was happening was that they were being made fun of by other members. Obviously, not all furries did this, but things escalated, and eventually SA banned discussion of it. Heavy handed, yes, but that's what happened.

My overall point is, depending on which one of the myriad branches of furridom you belong to, you do things that are just not normal for the general population. Dress up as animals, claim to be spiritually an animal, anthropomorphic art, etc. To most people, it's just goddamned weird. Sorry, but that's the truth. I'm sure people would find many aspects about myself weird as hell as well. It's not the same as homosexuality; that's just a switch of the gender the "norm" is attracted to. This is on a whole different plane.

Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with being a furry, or that you should be ashamed of. But you shouldn't be surprised at strange looks, that's all I'm saying.

84. Even though it's not my thing, everyone should be allowed to lawfully expresses how they feel.
There definitely exists a hierarchy when it comes to oppression and bigotry, unfortunately, and if you are in an oppressed group, it's easier to make fun of something that is different, rather than to get to know more about them.
