They used to show it in school, and it was on TV every fricken' weekend for my entire childhood it seems.
The theme music haunts me to this day.
Nothing the Hitler Channel has ever produced measures up to it.
I caught a few minutes of the finale last weekend. Fucking excellent.
Recommend. Recommend. Recommend.

I watched "The War" recently which inspired me to rewatch the WoW.
The Hitler channel in the UK seems to rerun random episodes of this daily, which is fine by me. This sort of thing takes a lot of money and time. Actually I just read on Wikipedia by chance that it was the most expensive British tv series to date. It's the richness that's the thing, the fact they spend a bunch of resources getting footage and interviews that fit in with the narration more or less perfectly.
My only objection is the Eurocentrism of it - the internal politics of Japan for instance are fairly neglected (iirc, I'm half way through it and last watched it a while ago) - it is a bbc thing after all. Whereas the stuff about Nazi Germany is pretty good. Def. from a British perspective.

Olivier's narration is tops.
Highly recommended!

9. Oops, just saw your post here! |
|
Yeah, if they've done bad things to the blu ray set, then skip it...
The regular DVD will be great.

19. Were all of your disques alright? |
|
The World at War was one of my early DVD purchases. Only a couple disques didn't play well. Probably a printing goof. One I remember having problems focused on Holland. It kept freezing.
Great series.

12. The segment "Remember" is one of the most moving to me. |
|
I've got the whole thing on DVD, but that segment is one of the best.
And the music in that series is great!

13. It is great, very informative and very good film...The BBC has several series |
|
of this caliber, including "World War I", which has always struck me as a terrifying war all the way around.
I get "The Military Channel" on Dish, and I watch it often.

14. which documentary are you referring to? |
|
I've watched "The First World War", a fairly recent British doc. from Channel 4, but haven't seen a BBC one. I'd be interested to see it if there's another BBC one. There was one in the 60s called "The Great War" on the BBC I haven't seen.
