31. Cholmondeley.
.
.
.
.
.
.
It's actually a British surname, but I could swear when I was growing up,
I heard it used like a first name on TV and in films, etc.
.
.
.
.
.
Mainly because such an odd-looking name is simply pronounced "chum-lee".
.
.
.
.
.
I'd never actually NAME a child this because I wouldn't want to condemn
him to getting his ass kicked each and every day.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Although, with a name like Cholmondeley...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
...he's certainly deserve it.
.
.
.

So shoot me, I am a traditionalist when it comes to given names. I have family members with ambiguous names, unusual or unpopular names, or names derived from surnames. It just causes the kids grief. Mom named us with traditional names (we were all girls) and resisted using nicknames, so I guess I inherited this from her.

No Christophers in the family for generations, to my disappointment. But I do have a young friend named Christopher now so I'm happy.

A family in our neighborhood had Patricia = Pat, Michelle = Mikey, Roberts = Bobby and another that I can't remember now. Mikey was in my graduating class and absolutely hated the nickname by senior high.

Our family had Edith (Edi to distinguish her from our grandmother with the same name), Barbara, Anne and Marian.

64. You all are too funny
I have 5 boys. Had huge arguments with the ex about names. He actually wanted to name one "Bear".

I eventually named one of my cats "Bear". Well, the cat looks like a bear. The child doesn't. Okay, maybe these days he does, when he goes a few days without shaving, but that's a whole other topic.

Names. I had a whole arsenal of girl names picked out, but since I didn't have the opportunity to use ANY of them, just sort of gave up and picked from the list of boys' names in the dictionary. Still, they seem pretty content with what they're called these days. "Hey you!", "Kid", and "What's your name again?!" work well.

89. Thor!!
I love that name.

Funny story - well, to me. I was the nursery nurse in a delivery, early AM, pounding lightning storm ouside, cracking and all. Just vicious. Well, Thor is the Norse god of lightning, among other things. After the baby was delivered, I asked as I always do, when I was cleaning him up, giving whiffs of O2 and all - "So what's his name?" Dad says "Thor." I kinda chuckled, thinking he was kidding, considering the storm that was still raging outside.

Nope, he was serious. Baby's name was Thor, and I've always loved that name since.

Don't burden him with something that is cute on a boy but not a man.

Edited on Tue Aug-31-10 09:48 PM by applegrove
later she realized that 'Mike Cameron' was the full name of a guy she had a big crush on in grade 7. LOL! I think it would be interesting to know why people choose the names they choose for their kids.
