Poll question: Which cover song should we learn?
Our band, 'Vendooza', ...

www.vendooza.net

...needs to learn a couple of cover songs to round out our set. We have a repertoire of 15 originals with a handful of other original songs that aren't complete, but we thought it would be fun to learn a couple of cover songs.

Take into consideration that we're a bunch of mid-40-ish ex-punks who play high energy Midwestern/Detroit power pop/garage rock kinda stuff. Guitars only, very loud.

So which song do you think best fits us?

3. Me too.
I had a friend in a local band called "Iggy Yoakum and the Pogo Ponies" and they only did Punk songs country-style, or Country songs Punk-style.

They were great.

6. We've never actually played that song live.
Not sure why it's on our site.

But that's reason enough, not to do an Iggy song. Best to branch out as much as we can.

Know what I mean?

It's either got to be something more obscure, or something much further out there.

11. Mystic Spiral
From the cartoon "Daria." They had a great song called "Every Dog Has Its Day."

You put me on a short leash
And took away my hydrant
You ate up all my kibble
Now my coat's no longer vibrant
My nose is dry and chapped
But this puppy's here to stay
Rub my belly, baby
Every dog has his day
ARRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

15. An unlikely cover? Here's a great one.
The band Any Trouble (early 80s from Stiff Records) recorded a great live cover of Abba's "The Name Of The Game". I'm not an Abba fan, which I know is good for a severe flaming here, but their version actually made this song listenable.

And Vendooza covering an ABBA song would be sweet.

I'm thinkin' maybe 'SOS'.

27. So far, nobody in our audience has smiled.
It pretty much looks like a sea of pissed-off people dressed in black with a cigarettes hanging out of their mouths.

Seems like we attract the angry artist crowd.

25. The Kool-Aid pitcher
I know that's sacrilege, but there's a certain Kool-Aid commercial in which the pitcher groans exactly like the Captain. '

Zig-Zag Wanderer doesn't really require that rasp, anyway.

30. 'OH YEAHHH!'
You're right, 'Zig Zag' doesn't really need it. In fact, a lot of Safe as Milk, barring 'Electricity' and a few others is more or less singable.

22. 'He's a Whore' is an awesome song, my old band covered it
And with great success, I might add. We did have endless arguments on the lyrics--our bassist somehow hearing 'I could even crack a smile/But I left it inside of a mile' whereas everyone else heard 'I couldn't even fake a smile/But I'm laughing inside all the while'.

Without keyboards, try 'Totally Wired' or 'Living Too Late'--awesome songs both. One comes complete with a Hunter S. Thompson quote.
