Is he baseball or football? Those are the only two professions (plus maybe basketball) that could get a whole culture to collectively gasp in horror and go into meltdown over an injury that might make a person no longer able to practice that profession.

We certainly don't see it happen when a teacher, doctor, construction worker, policeman, nurse, etc. gets injured.

Reminds of the scene from Python's "The Meaning of Life" set during the Boer War - the Sargeant comes into the officer's tent to say that the battle is over and that hundreds are dead and injured, and the officers stop him from telling his story to inform that all that is well and good, but, good man, an officer has lost a leg.
