Do you wash the can opener after opening a can of tuna? |
|
I do!
Tonight I saw my roommate open a can of tuna and put the can opener right back in the drawer.
I commented, and she said "what?" I repeated, "you just opened that can of tuna and you didn't wash the can opener afterward".
She laughed and said she washes the can opener about once every 10 years, and she suggested that I might be a (sic) hypochondriac.

And then I dry it and put it back in the drawer. Other people can do what they want with their own can openers, but I've gotta say I'm more than a little skeeved by the thought of a can opener that gets washed only once every 10 years. :yoiks:

3. The can opener gets washed every time I use it. |
|
But that means it only gets washed about half the time. I am thoroughly disgusted! I'm by no means a neat freak, but that is just gross.

It's gross to not wash the can opener after using it. I even wash it after opening not smelly things like peaches.

4. I wash it, or at least rinse in hot water, but now I wonder ... |
|
what's normal, for people who have electric can openers? Do they ever get washed? Do the cutters come off, so they can get washed?
That's one labor-saving device that I never saw a need for. But, they are sort of cool.

16. Electric can openers? How lazy can you get! |
|
Oh look, you just stick the can on a magnet, and the machine spins it around the circular blade. Woo-Hoo! :D

until rheumatoid arthritis struck and I couldn't use a manual one. So, damn, now it's a necessity. And yes, the blade comes right off for washing.

21. you beat me to it, Ineeda -- my mother has very bad arthritis in her hands... |
|
and so for years, before the cat and dog food had pull-off tabs (which really aren't any easier for her), she'd use the electric can opener and wash the blade.
We didn't eat much canned food ... it was mostly for pet stuff :)
But I have a manual opener, and it always gets washed, or rinsed with super hot water.

6. How many folks wash their electric can opener after using it? |
|
As for the manual openers, it depends on what I opened. I'll just rinse it when I open cans of soup or veggies but for tuna, salmon and stuff like that, I usually wash and rinse the opener.

something like el pato or other vegetable-y things in water? maybe a rinse and back to the drawer - too much action in the dishwasher dulls the cutting disk, but smelly or oily foods need to be washed off.
I also put a drop of veg oil on it when it gets hard to turn - lubrication is your friend!
Finally, I BUY A NEW ONE when if stops cutting! Same with cheese graters and potato peelers! I hate dull tools and rusty cheese graters gross me the hell out.

20. All sorts of reasons to buy electric can openers -- the second=best of which... |
|
. . . . . . . . . ... arthritis... was mentioned above. . . . Some people are just klutzy/dangerous with ANY sharp utensil. . . . But the absolute BESTEST REASON IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD... . . . . . . . . . . ... is to momentarily hit the button, run into the next room and grab a seat. Then look up in confused innocence when your cats come into the room with curious looks (which turn into accusatory glares when they don't buy your act). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Those looks are even worth the poop in your shoe the next morning. . . .

we keep the can opener in the dish washing area. Why? If health inspectors come apparently one of the first things they look at is the can opener for bacteria. So we washed it every day.
