Silent short black and white video from 1944. Beautiful film if you really like cats.

5. I have never seen a male cat involved with a litter of kittens.
Usually our mom cats were VERY protective of those kittens when it came to ANY Male cat--Dad or not.

Quite a lovely film. Thanks for posting this!

6. I too was surprised
that the male cat was so involved with the new borns, but, cats are their own and can have some "un-cat like" behaviors.

8. I had a neutered male cat and a female.
The female escaped one day and got herself "in trouble".

When her time came, I found a box that I thought would
be perfect (it was too small, and I had to end up cutting
the front off so she could move around comfortably while
giving birth) and put it in a perfect place (the worst place
I could have picked, out in the open, in the dining room.)

The male cat was a nasty, mean cat, but only to other cats,
he was a total suck-up to humans and even tried to keep
other cats away from us, so I was worried about him attacking
the kittens.

The day after they were born, I was messing around in the
kitchen and I heard a commotion and mewing coming from the
dining room, so I looked in and saw the male cat with a kitten
in his mouth, making for the living room. I looked in the
box and discovered that all 7 kittens were GONE!

:wow:

I watched the male cat take the kitten with him and drag
it under the couch. I was horrified.

When I looked under the flap of the couch, there were all
7 kittens!

Otis, the male, had obviously decided that the kittens were
too exposed in their "birthing bed" that I had created and
had moved them to a hidey-hole. Mom soon joined the kittens,
and that was where they stayed until they started walking.

Mom-cat was only there to feed them, Otis was their
moment by moment parent, and HE was the cat that went from
room to room in the house, howling in misery when his babies
were given to other families, one by one.

Mom-cat never noticed they were gone.

So, the Dad-cat thing didn't surprise me!

10. Famous short film by the same people - Meshes of the Afternoon
Hammid and Deren are known (probably mostly to film students) for this experimental short film. There is some dispute as to who is the primary author of it; it is usually credited as Maya Deren's work. It was originally silent; the music was added later with Hammid's approval.
