What song was your wedding theme?
my sister is getting married in August and has desperately asked for suggestions. She's stuck at work all day with no access to DU!! (the horror, the horror!)

Nothing too sappy, maybe something funny, definitely something sweet. Suggestions welcome!

1. "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
It was the linchpin of my wedding ceremony. My best friend sang it in a beautiful gospel rendition. Not a dry eye in the house.

2. Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
Typed on the wedding invitations :-). What more can I say, it was the early 70's.

Sunshine Of Your Love
by Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Pete Brown
It's getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes.
I'll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.
I'll be with you darling soon,
I'll be with you when the stars start falling.

I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love.

I'm with you my love,
The light's shining through on you.
Yes, I'm with you my love,
It's the morning and just we two.
I'll stay with you darling now,
I'll stay with you till my seas are dried up.

Chorus

Repeat Second Verse

I've been waiting so long
I've been waiting so long
I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love.

I don't think you would really want to use my wedding song. It wasn't played at the actual wedding but it was the hit of the reception. Also at my husband's funeral it was the first song played. My real suggestion would be Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen.

20. Heaven 90210 by Urge Overkill
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 07:43 PM by BigMcLargehuge
This was me and Mrs. McLargehuge's wedding song.

Heaven 90210 (Urge Overkill from the Album: Saturation)

You see them coming, the queen of hearts and the king of fools,
Me and Innocence, just playing cards by the swimming pool.
They pull me out of an empty place, left me all alone I wanna touch you.
Think I'm movin' on back to Kansas
And I thought that savin' you would save me.

When she comes to me and takes my hand
When pain is all I know
She gives me heavenly thrills, 90210.

Lookin' at you as the sun was risin',
Nothin' to do just-a-watch at the man upon the moon
Look into his eyes and the sad blue glow, and it ain't surprisin', no,
To see a blind man lookin' twice before he crosses the road, yeah
Califor-ni-a, don't slip and slide into the sea on me
The sun still shines in L.A. when you're gone.

When she comes to me and takes my hand
When pain is all I know
And gives me heavenly thrills, 90210
Just gives me heavenly thrills, 90210
She gives me heavenly thrills.

21. A very pretty nice one - I Will Be Here by Stephen Curtis Chapman
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 08:16 PM by SaidFred
Lyrics:
Tomorrow morning if you wake up

and the sun does not appear

I, I will be here

If in the dark you lose sight of love

Hold my hand and have no fear

'Cause I, I will be here

I will be here when you feel like being quiet

When you need to speak your mind

I will listen, and I will be here

when the laughter turns to crying

Through the winning, losing and trying, we'll be together

'Cause I will be here

Tomorrow morning if you wake up

and the future is unclear

I, I will be here

As sure as the season are made for change

Our lifetimes were made for years

So I, I will be here

I will be here and you can cry on my shoulder

when the mirror tells us we're older

I will hold you, and I will be here

to watch you grow in beauty

and tell you all the things you are to me

I will be here

I will be true to the promise I have made

to you and to the One who gave you to me

23. "At Last", Etta James, but Cindy Lauper
just did a CD of jazz and blues classics. Give it a hear. Her "At Last" made all the hair on my body stand on end. Just heartfelt and absolutely true.

How about Queen's "You're My Best Friend".

Are you talking ceremony music, first dance music?

The theme of mine would have been "Oh, Shit, Soon This Wedding and Reception Will Be Over and Then We Will Laugh and Cry and Laugh and Cry About All the Money we Spent and We Would Have Been Married Anyway and Let's Just Get the Hell out of Town, Before Any Other Person is Offended, Particularly Because We Forbid the Chicken Dance, and What do you Mean, All of the Liquor is Gone, and Who Packed it Up and Took it Away When my Beloved and I haven't had a Chance To Have One Cocktail, which we Both Need Dearly Right Now, and Exactly Where the Fuck Did They Take It. And, I Don't Want to Hear that our Loved Ones were Putting Food in their Purses and Wrapping it Up on Plastic Plates because They Might Want a Snack Later, and Now We Have Nothing to Take Home to Feed the Hungry People who Will Be Appearing at Our House Tomorrow Morning for Another Party. Which was Not My Idea."

25. Okay, here's the list from our wedding
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 08:55 PM by JulieRB
The music your sister picks may have something to do with the venue. If she's getting married in a church, there are some churches that won't allow "secular" music. If this is the case (and your sister has access to a choir,) I'd try "I Sing The Mighty Power of God", "Song of Joy" or even Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus". The latter might make a very good processional; the choir geeks will know the audience stands during the performance of the "Hallelujah Chorus".

I may be the only one, but I notice that "Trumpet Voluntary" is waning in popularity, and the traditional wedding march seems to be making a comeback, at least at huge and formal weddings.

I walked up the aisle to Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky". If you'd like something more uptempo, "As" from the same CD, "Songs In The Key Of Life" would definitely be a great choice. Our recessional was David Benoit's version of "Linus and Lucy". Our first dance was "True Companion".

We taped the music for the reception from our CD collection; here's a few of our choices:

"A Kiss to Build A Dream On," Louis Armstrong
"Wonderful World," Louis Armstrong
"Make Time Stop," INXS
"Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," Van Morrison
"I'll Be Seeing You," Tony Bennett
"Natural Woman," Aretha Franklin
"You Are The Sunshine Of My Life," Stevie Wonder
"Let's Stay Together," Al Green

and many, many more.

I noticed that the couple in "American Wedding" danced to a song I have never heard at a wedding, but would be a great choice -- Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic". I've also heard of couples using "I Feel Good" as their recessional.

It's up to your sister and her fiance, but if there was one thing I'd encourage her to do, it would be to perhaps use music that isn't "traditional" for weddings, and music that means something to them as a couple. We've been married for over ten years now, and those that attended our wedding are still talking about the music -- we tried to pick music that we loved, and those in attendance really responded to it.

Good luck to them, and I hope she'll get some great suggestions!

Julie*

*Okay, I left one out: Etta James' "At Last", which is one of the greatest songs I think I've ever heard. If your sister decides on this one, the only acceptable versions are the original by Miss James, and Cyndi Lauper. Celine Dion's version of this incredibly beautiful, heartfelt song is a crime against music and against nature. (I'm not passionate about this, or anything.)

"Total Eclipse of the Heart"

Just totally love that song. When I first downloaded it and listened to it with my daughter sitting in my lap, (she was 4 at the time and now 6) at that time she was my "Bright Eyes" (now finally found my one in life, her true father that granted is not biological, but in physical and spiritualy her daddy) she started crying and looked at me and said "Am I your Bright Eyes??" just still bring tears to my eyes thinking of that moment. Such a beautiful song. Think we will make it "our" song when we get married later on this year.

32. "Interlude" sung by Morrissey and Siouxie Sioux
Time is like a dream
And now, for a time, you are mine
Let's hold fast to the dream
That tastes and sparkles like wine

Who knows (who knows)
If it's real
Or just something we're both dreaming of
What seems like an interlude now
Could be the beginning of love

Loving you
Is a world that's strange
So much more than my heart can hold
Loving you
Makes the whole world change
Loving you, I could not grow old

No, nobody knows
When love will end
So till then, sweet friend ...

Time is like a dream
And now, for a time, you are mine
Let's hold fast to the dream
That tastes and sparkles like wine

Who knows (who knows)
If it's real
Or just something we're both dreaming of ?
What seems like an interlude now
Could be the beginning of love
What seems like an interlude now
Could be the beginning of love
What seems like an interlude now
Could be the beginning of love

35. Me and my Hunny's Favorites
What Kind of Man Will I Be? Chicago

Girl, well it’s been one of those days again
And it seems like the harder I try
Over and over, I’m right back where I began
But you understand
Oh girl, when nothing else in this world goes right
Oh, I just wanna run to you, you’ll pull me through
Whoa baby, who wouldn’t wanna have you in their life?

Tell me what kind of man would I be
Living a life without any me there
And I know you could surely survive without me
But if I had to live without you, tell me what kind of man would I be?

Times, when it was pointless for me to try
I was more than a desperate man
What seemed like forever was gone with one touch of your hand
Oh girl, if I could count all those sleepless nights
When you were there for me
A fool could see
Whoa baby, once that I found you there was no letting go

Tell me what kind of man would I be
Living a life without any me there
And I know you could surely survive without me
But if I had to live without you, tell me what kind of man would I be?

Tell me what kind of man would I be
Living a life without any me there
And I know you could surely survive without me
But if I had to live without you, tell me what kind of man would I be,
tell me what kind of man would I be...

36. Celine Dion's "The Colour Of My Love"
I'll paint my mood in shades of blue
Paint my soul to be with you
I'll sketch your lips in shaded tones
Draw your mouth to my own

I'll draw your arms around my waist
Then all doubt I shall erase
I'll paint the rain that softly lands on your wind blown hair

I'll trace a hand to wipe out your tears
A look to calm your fears
A silhouette of dark and light
While we hold each other oh so tight

I'll paint a sun to warm your heart
Swearing that we'll never part
That's the colour of my love

I'll paint the truth
Show how I feel
Try to make you completely real
I'll use a brush so light and fine
To draw you close and make you mine

I'll paint the truth
Show how I feel
Try to make you completely real
I'll use a brush so light and fine
To draw you close and make you mine

I'll paint a sun to warm your heart
Swearing that we'll never part
That's the colour of my love

I'll draw the years all passing by
So much to learn so much to try

And with this ring our lives will start
Swearing that we'll never part
I offer what you cannot buy
Devoted love until we die
