Anybody know whether spokeo.com is safe/reputable? |
|
Somebody sent the info below, and I'll do some web research on it before clicking on it, but there is always somebody here who knows stuff already and saves time. Thanking in advance.

We were recently alerted to a website that has lots of personal information on people and were amazed to see everything they had on us. You may want to check out the site below, spokeo.com, and see what this site has on you. It's a little unsettling. There is a way to remove your name from the data base by following the directions below.
· A site called spokeo.com. It's a new online USA phone book w/personal info. Everything from pics you've posted on FB or the web, your approx credit score, home value, photos of your home, income, age! Remove yourself by searching your name, find the URL of your page, then go to the bottom right corner of the page and click on the Privacy button to remove yourself.

1. Snopes says it's all true |
|
But that it's just one of a plethora of similar sites and that blocking yourself from this one is whack-a-mole, an ongoing process. I don't do Facebook or such, but am curious what it's got on me, so will check it out. Obviously, I've got plenty of embarrassing posts here... http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/spokeo.asp

2. Well, I've courageously clicked on it, and ... |
|
I did, indeed, find myself. But you have to subscribe at about $3/mo for a year or 3 months' minimum in order to see the full results and to do the blocking. The free page shows full name, rounded-off age, property tax value of your house, and a phone number (wrong, for me). For paid membership it offers e-addy and other stuff like on other sites. I don't guess it's worth it to pay since Google and other such is just as bad.

3. You don't have to pay to block. |
|
At least there is a procedure given which I used... It probably is a case of "whack-a-mole" though. They just compile publicly available information apparently.:eyes:
