"Adorable Kids With Obsolete Technology"
Adorable Kids With Obsolete Technology

Ready to feel really old? In this video, some French-Canadian kids are presented with technology from the 80′s and 90′s. They then try to figure out what the items are, and the results are delightful. Although the video is in French (and I don’t speak any French), I could easily follow what was going on.

My favorite parts: upon being presented with a Gameboy, a girl declares it a “telephone” (makes sense from her perspective — a little screen, some buttons, made to be held in the hand); and the part around 2:30 where kids encounter a 45rpm turntable, one recognizes it as a tool of DJs, and he spontaneously figures out how to scratch.

Delightful. And welcome to a new decade. What will kids in 20 years think an iPod is? My guess is “telephone.”

Funny video at link :D

1. Nice.
That was a good find.

I think my brother had one of those Fisher Price record players.

4. Oddly enough, it was posted to the twitr feed on Civil3D.com
when I was looking at new tips for using the software. I know now that I would like to have a copy of Civil-3D 2011 :P

I'm trying to remember if anyone in our family ever had an 8-track player, too. I think we skipped over that technology in favor of the cassette. Although I would have loved to have had a quadraphonic system :)

2. Thanks. Shared on FB. Makes me want to go to yard sales
to buy a bunch of old stuff and bring it into the classroom just for the fun and exploration. Maybe we could make this an archaeological dig imitation.

6. I was thinking they could have included a typewriter,
but the kids might have gotten that one somewhat easily. I could see them look for how to plug it in or where the monitor was :P

That's a good idea about turning finds from yardsales into an educational event. You might also go to thrift shops, junk stores or join FreeCycle. One of the U.S. labs has a huge junkyard of obsolete equipment, but I can't find it right now. That would be a cool fieldtrip, for anyone! :D

7. I still have my videodisc set for Disney's Fantasia.
I should see about getting it transferred, since I've read that the DVD-release edited out even more "offensive" material...
