Ricky Gervais: Golden Globe Host 'Doesn't Care' If Anyone Was Offended By Jokes

UPDATE II: Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk told The Hollywood Reporter that, "He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky."

And he had no idea what was coming.

"I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was heard was the same time you heard it," Berk said. "When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected.

UPDATE: Rob Shuter of PopEater reports that one Hollywood Foreign Press Association (they put on and vote for the awards) told him that Gervais will not return as host -- and won't ever get nominated for a Golden Globe, either.

"Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure," the HFPA member said. "For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain."

I mean I thought the guy was funny as hell but when he did that Scientology joke I knew his time as a Globes host was done.

1. I don't get it
In the promos he said he was going to try to "make them cry".

I guess they thought he was kidding but the promos indicated he wasn't going to be nice.

2. When you bite someone in the butt

and that someone is signing your paycheck,
it's not a good thing.

He went way too far.
He wanted to make everyone else squirm because
he wasn't nominated- childish and it backfired, bigtime.

3. It's a shame because he is very talented
and the HFP even went so far as to say he would never be nominated for a Golden Globe either. Those GGs are usually a good forcaster for those who will win Oscars and Emmys

9. It is a shame, LynneSin.

He is talented and has a good range of
characters he can portray.

11. When you are independently wealthy and don't need their paycheck
You can do whatever you want. I doubt he could spend all the money he makes just from The Office if he lives to be 100 .

13. He was refreshing
This show is nothing more than a chance for the HFP to rub elbows with the rich and famous. It has NO credibility, and hasn't for years.

I enjoyed Gervais' comments. To say that not only is he not welcomed back, he's not nominated in the future - maybe next year they could get Rich Little or Dennis Miller, perhaps?

4. Ridiculous. So obviously these awards have even less credibility than they started with
if they already know they will never nominate one of his movies.

Boohoo what a bunch of whiners.

5. why do people even care about the GG anyway?
it's just an opportunity for celebs to get smashed live on TV. And while Gervais' remarks were a bit OMG, hell, what did they expect? He did what they hired him to do, ffs. :banghead:

6. Funny thing is that the "gay scientologist" joke is the go-to joke right now for comedians.
They're ALL doing it at their own shows and on cable shows, so it was kind of lame him doing the same joke for the mainstream audience. It makes him look like a hack.

I'm not offended by the joke, just the unoriginality of it.

7. The head of the HFPA wasn't amused either
Talking about how Eva Longoria's introduction of the head of the HFPA compared with his tasks of the night: "I helped him off the toilet and popped his teeth in."

However, don't mess with the fucking cults, they love to show their power.

8. One of the all-time FUNNIEST things I've ever seen on live TV was...
.
.
.
.
...when Whoopi Goldberg and Bobcat Goldthwaite were hosting some major film award show.
.
.
.
Whoopi was speaking about something and Bobcat was getting more and more agitated in the background.
.
.
.
His energy finally burst out with a one-line non-sequitor:
.
.
.
"I-I-I-I-I-'ve got a woody!!!!!"
.
.
.
Even Whoopi Goldberg... WHOOPI GOLDBERG... lost it for quite some time.
.
.
.

17. The Globes are a joke anyway
The HFPA bases their voting on box office receipts and which studios slip them the most cash under the table.

18. Ricky did what Ricky does --
Edited on Tue Jan-18-11 08:13 PM by Hell Hath No Fury

I love him., personally, and thought that many of his jabs -- espeically about "The Tourist" being nominated for anything -- were right on and needed saying.

The HFP had been a very long-time joke (ah, the days of Pia!) and had worked very hard over the last ten years to be taken seriously. "The Tourist" nonsense was a clear indicator they are still a handful of Hollwywood insiders trying to garner ratings and access and power.

That has always been part of the joke about the HFP -- they must have no more than a hundred or so real members, most of whom work the press junkets simply for the many goodies and who want to rub shoulders with "stars".

On edit:

"Frankly, each and every one of group’s 93 members could simultaneously be involved in a sordid sex scandal and Hollywood would still show up for the party. Why? Because it’s a great and now entrenched celebration, the only time that both TV and film stars share the same room on such a grandiose basis, with lots of free booze flowing.

The fact that the HFPA is having Ricky Gervais back as Golden Globes show host after he viciously mocked the organization is a reminder of  just how dysfunctional their relationship with Hollywood is. They know they’re a joke; Hollywood knows they’re a joke. And come January, stars will be gathered once again on the Beverly Hilton red carpet, ready to enter laughing."
