But then I come from the land of pica, where people, particularly pregnant women, eat some wierd shit, like soil. Sounds terrible but it's supposed to be the body's astounding attempt to address mineral deficiencies. Poverty at its finest.

She grew up in North Dakota, and didn't have any diet deficiencies that she was aware of. But of course it's true that North Dakota has lovely rich dark soil. So maybe she just liked the taste.
